New content alone is not enough to keep an audience past the first play through, unless there is a reason to return to it. What methods can destiny do? 1- Weekly story beats/engaging bite sized story 2- An enticing loot grind Destiny scrapped the 1st and isnt doing the 2nd.
The life blood of replayability for any successful Looter Shooter or MMORPG is and will continue to be loot RNG. The moment you curb RNG and remove rarity is the moment a game dies. These games purposefully keep the best loot rare to entice players, promoting engagement.
When everything is a Tier 5, everything feels like a tier 1. We went from aspirational loot seen as trophies through triumphing in activities to a static, insanely power crept, level where nothing feels better than anything else. That ruins replayability and the trophy feeling.
