6th grade scientists squealed with excitement upon seeing the microbial growth from the surfaces they elected to swab. The power of comparison between a control and experimental side was apparent!

6th grade scientists wired an increasing number of light bulbs in a parallel circuit, and using hand generators achieved seven lit bulbs.

Great group of humans in Roots and Shoots weeded and planted our garden in the STEM Park. Classic MPH moment of student lead service and people in grades 6 thru 11 working together.

Pandemic science teaching continues to challenge. Today, however, was a smashing Forensics class success as we zoomed with Syracuse University students, who demonstrated forensic testing we can’t perform in the high school setting!

Coriolis who? Coriolis what? Is a line straight? What happens when you draw a straight line and your partners rotate the turntable, your point of reference? Well, you get this:

Another covid workaround while trying to teach STEM.....Off we go to the gym to distance, each small group with their own straw launcher, masks, gloves, goggles, and totally awesome STEM fun!

Because when two students restage Monopoly as Geopoly for their final project one must play the phenomenal game. Properties renamed for glacial features, pebbles rather than hotels, extinction replaced jail and sediments replaced rail roads made for great intellectual fun.

6th grade aviators test fly their planes as they learn about the four flight forces. Broken rubber bands presented the opportunity to learn the planes fly beautifully with just a gentle toss to generate thrust. Science in action!

Total fun! 6th grade scientists assemble their own Alpha and complete test flights. So far, max flight was about 1:20 mins. Planes are rubber band powered with scaled control surfaces. The 4 flight forces, studied last week, are put into action. Modifications being discussed!

Sixth grade students at Manlius Pebble Hill School in Syracuse, NY wonder: What does your stomach feel like when you are in space? How is the live feed we are watching created and sent to Earth? Did you always want to be an astronaut? #askNASA

Despite a few sprinkles, sixth grade scientists dove into creating ecosystem diagrams while being in an ecosystem. The sprinkles actually prompted students to add water and other abiotic features to their diagrams.

What’s the best way to learn about drumlins, clay that demonstrates liquefaction and other ‘cool’ glacial features? Why yes, walk through the middle of a drumlin at Chimney Bluffs.
