Fornication and death! The odd scent of Hawthorn! Symbol of May, marriage & fertility. Hawthorn flowers contain the chemical triethylamine, also found in newly rotting flesh. As such, Hawthorn has long been thought to be unlucky within the home! #folklore
In #Folklore, It was considered bad luck to destroy an Ants or ‘Muryan’ nest as they were thought to be the souls of unbaptised children. A piece of tin placed on a ‘bank of the Muryans’ was said to turn to silver if placed at the correct moment in line with the moon’s cycle.
Cockatrice (Or Basilisk) This venomous creature featured in classical literature and The King James Bible. Deadly poisonous with extremely sharp teeth. It could kill all animal or plant life with just its stare or breath. Only the weasel was resistant it. #FolkloreThursday

Nue, the Chimera of Japan. Thought to comprise of a variety of creatures. In Some cases it had the head of a monkey, body of a dog, legs of tiger and tail of a snake. It hid itself in a black venomous cloud and was thought to bring bad luck. #folklore #illustration
The Hippocampus, meaning ‘horse and sea monster’. Legend of Ancient Rome and Greece. Believed to be the adult version of Sea Horses. The Hippocampus was the mount of the Sea Gods, Neptune and Poseidon and four were said to pull Poseidon’s chariot. #folklore #illustration
