DAY 24 Here is the video I meant to post yesterday. It shows an important part of my work which is planning students lessons. I aim to keep session interactive, varied and fun.
DAY 20 - MY FAVOURITE PART OF BEING A TEACHER... interacting with my students. I work 1-1 with my student to help them catch up and keep up in maths lessons. We really consolidate new concepts and have fun! #30thingsaboutme
DAY 17 - MY TOP MATHS TIP... READ THE QUESTION TWICE AND CALCULATE ONCE (based on the old builder's saying "measure twice, cut once") Many of my students rush straight in and work out what they 'think' the question asked, rather than what it did ask. Less haste more speed!
DAY 19 - WHICH xTABLE DID YOU FIND HARDEST TO LEARN? I loved learning my tables - I could just 'see' the patterns, but setting them to pop music is great too. Take a look at this x3 tables set to 'Uptown Funk'. youtu.be/9XzfQUXqiYY
DAY 18 - OUT OF THE OFFICE... I love walking to the top of Gold Hill in my home town of Shaftesbury (where Ridley Scott filmed the Hovis advert). It looked lovely in the recent snow and the view beyond is spectacular. It always makes me smile.
DAY 16 - MY LEAST FAVOURITE TASK IS ... doing my accounts! You'd think that loving maths as I do, that I would love doing this job, but it feels me with dread. This was the first task I delegated, which leaves me free to teach. Horray!
DAY 15 - HOW I RELAX... meditating is my favourite way to unwind and refresh. I started about 3 months ago to help focus my mind at the start of the day and it has really helped. I use the HEADSPACE app #30thingsaboutme
DAY 14 - MY INSPIRATION... MR SCHMEISING, who was my secondary school maths teacher at Noadswood School. He was so patient and great at explaining maths concepts to us. He instilled a love of maths in me and made me want to teach maths to others. THANK YOU SIR #30thingsaboutme
DAY 13 - MY WHY... Teaching has been all I've ever wanted to do. I remember the excitement of teaching my first class at Westfields Junior School . Shaping young people's minds and being witness to many 'light bulb moments'. It is THE BEST JOB of all #30thingsaboutme
DAY 11 - AN APP I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT... I've recently discovered PEAK - the brain training app and I am well addicted to it. I have it on my iPhone so I can do a little 10 minute session in-between tutoring and I am hoping it will help me keep brain active. I also love Suduko
DAY 10 - VIEW FROM MY DESK... This is where I tutor my online maths students. I'm just about to log in to work with a young man who is preparing for his GCSE exams. We are covering the Indices Rules and I'll be marking his homework on Compound Interest and Depreciation.
DAY 9 - A MISTAKE I MADE... I wish I had read more when I was young. I did enjoy books such as 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' and 'Stig of the Dump' but I didn't push myself. I really regret it now and hope to catch up when I retire #30thingsaboutme
DAY 8 - MY FAVOURITE MEAL... MACARONI CHEESE Mum taught me how to make a kicking cheese sauce when I was a student. Once added to cooked pasta with a goodly grating of strong cheese on top and popped under the grill for 10 minutes, it is THE BEST MEAL EVER #30thingsaboutme
DAY 7 - MY SATURDAY IS SPENT... doing educational assessments. I love meeting new students, discovering their strengths and weaknesses and sharing how I can help them become more confident mathematicians.
