Kids in Mlango Kubwa play under the shade of trees we planted 2 years ago. When we talk of sanitizing to curb the spread of #Covid19, we always leave out our environment, which remains paramount to a sustainable form of hygiene, long after the pandemic🌳🌳 #TreesForBetterFutures
Last week, we gathered in Kiamaiko, Mathare, to honour the memories of those lost to police killings. Through a candle-lit vigil and planting memorial trees, we vowed to keep their memories alive and to demand justice. Thank you to all who stood with us! #MemoryAgainstForgetting
Throwing it back to a couple of months back @afnairobi moderating a panel discussion on the dignity of aid. Can you spot a familiar face? Mention them in the comments 👇👇 #aid #DevelopmentIssues #development #Nairobi
JUST NOW: A section of our members, seated right outside Mathare Empire studios have just been threatened with physical violence by policemen, should there be a crime nearby as from kesho! They accuse us of protecting thugs, and we don't know what to make of this. @UhaiWetu
#UNHA2: In informal settings, one challenge leads to another, creating a vicious circle of poverty & crime. Unemployment & lack of education are the root causes preventing #YOUTH from growing and tangibly contributing to making our cities safer & more prosperous.
As the Kenya Women Senators Association @KEWOSA1, we marked the #MothersDay2023 celebrations by visiting the incarcerated mothers and their children at the Lang'ata Women Maximum Prison. A medical camp and tree-planting excercise was conducted as a way to restore dignity and joy.
On this #MothersDay2023, we wish to extend our love & support to all the mothers who have lost a child to police violence or who have a child that has survived trauma. We understand the pain and heartache this experience brings, and we want you to know that you are not alone.
I had a lovely chat with @tom_wein & @caroline_teti last night, organized by Arnav Kapur of the @dev_dilemma. We unpacked the place of dignity in aid, the ways in which indignity manifests and how institutions can better their programs to include more dignity and implement it.
Aid should not only focus on meeting people's basic needs, but also empowering them to retain their dignity, make their own choices and be in charge of their own lives. Join us in this conversation by @dev_dilemma at @afnairobi on Thursday, alongside @tom_wein & @caroline_teti
After a long process of compiling data about Extrajudicial Executions (EJEs) & the enforced disappearances of our sons, we delivered the documentation to @lawsocietykenya President Eric Theuri @etadv through Public Interest Litigation Conveners Mwaura Wakabata & Wangari Kagai.
There are women who have lost children and husbands through his bullets, young people who because of their class status must navigate the bullseye on their backs; they are standing strong and together to collectively name names. They call him “Rashid”, “Rasho”, "Mjamaa"
Ahmed Rashid has existed as an unnamable yet omnipresent terror, one who drew his 'superpowers' from the state, or so it seemed. As Rashid is set to face the court today, #WanguiKimari delves into his bloody reign in Mathare & the ambiguous localized references to killer cops.
In light of the forthcoming polls, we will be marching to demand peaceful elections and justice for victims of post-election violence this Thursday. Your presence and solidarity will help us amplify election-oriented police excesses and seek dignified lives. Kindly join us. Viva!
#VagabondsInPower Last night, watching Fela Kuti's 1982 documentary film, #MusicIsTheWeapon with the Kambi Nare village in Mlango Kubwa, Mathare. #PanAfricanism
On 30/01/2022, NEMA ordered the permanent closure of all 15 slaughterhouses in Kiamaiko, citing that they had been releasing effluent into the Nairobi River. However, as the clock ticked, the Kiamaiko slaughterhouses stayed put. @wybanmusic writes⬇️ debunk.media/the-nine-lives…
The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit. #FridaysForFuture
