Some of the misconceptions that I’ve come across when teaching maths in primary school, and how I’m addressing them. Share yours and add ideas to mine!

Fractions of quantity: Divide by the bottom, times by the top, they chant. Except what are they multiplying by the top and bottom (yes, they can name them but it doesn’t flow in the rhyme). Divide whole by the bottom, X answer by the top.


Parallel lines never meet, we chant. Even if they go on for a million kilometres, I add. So why did they choose lines that are not parallel? Because in the picture they don’t meet. Now I ask them to continue the lines with a ruler to check whether they never meet.


Insult of the week: Me: find some perpendicular lines and right angles around the classroom Child: your forehead Me: thanks, but those are parallel lines
