If hamburger was beef then the name hamburger wouldn’t need to exist.
That last part is just as important as increasing understanding. I see many economists quoting the data and saying the economy is fine, without hearing how people experience it on a daily basis.
Why we academic economists gotta get out and talk to more folks. Be outside our bubbles. Maybe ~10% of college grads take Econ 101. Maybe <.1% take Intermediate Macro. Our HS econ curriculum isn't great. We need to talk to everyday folks because we can learn from each other.
I see lots of comments about West Point’s new mission. The motto remains Duty, Honor, Country as it ever has been. I recently had the honor of interviewing candidates for the incoming class and assure you the ones I met will uphold that motto as well as any of us old grads have.
