Two things: 1. Dr. McClellan is very plausibly wrong, and it is likely that the author of John’s Gospel did believe that Jesus was capital-G God 2. I promise you that this scholar of biblical studies has read John 1:1 before, so quoting it is not going to devastate him
That's not remotely the overall thesis of the Gospel of John. The author repeatedly denies Jesus is God.
