Democracy for the Arab World Now has assembled a series of short smart insights into what Trump 2.0 might mean for Palestine, Israel and the Middle East. Honoured to be part of this initiative. What Trump's Return Means for the Middle East: A Democracy in Exile Roundtable - DAWN

Israel is in defiance of more than 30 UN Security Council resolutions. It declares the UN Secretary General to be a persona non grata. It bombs UN schools and has killed 228 UN workers. Read my article. Can Article 25 of the U.N. Charter Impose Accountability on Israel? - DAWN

Israeli scholar Omar Bartov eloquently writes in The Guardian that Israel's conduct in Gaza meets the definition of the 1948 Genocide Convention: As a former IDF soldier and historian of genocide, I was deeply disturbed by my recent visit to Israel | Israel | The Guardian

"Honest" Reporting has said that I "made up facts" when I said in a CBC interview that the ICJ had found a "plausible" case of genocide in Gaza. Hmmm! Read para. 54 of the ICJ ruling in January, which they obviously haven't. Order of 26 January 2024 (icj-cij.org)

The US is a signatory to the Genocide Convention. Article 3 states that "complicity in genocide" is a punishable act. U.S. Approves Massive Arms Sales to Israel, Waives Leahy Sanctions Against Abusive Israeli Military Unit Amid Ongoing Atrocities - DAWN (dawnmena.org)

Honoured to be part of DAWN's roundtable on the meaning and consequence's of the ICJ ruling in South Africa v Israel on the Genocide Convention. dawnmena.org/the-global-imp…

"When the ICJ delivered its remarkable judgement, its measured tones masked a damning verdict". Read my article in DAWN on the ICJ's interim ruling on South Africa's genocide application against Israel: dawnmena.org/measured-yet-d…

Pres. Biden today sanctioned violent Israeli settlers. Is this the politics of distraction? The real issue is not settlers but the 300 Israeli settlements, which are a war crime under inter'l law and the engine of the illegal occupation. nytimes.com/live/2024/02/0…

The deliberate destruction of civilian buildings by an occupying power not absolutely required by military needs is not only a war crime, but may also be part of a successful genocide claim. The NYT reports on Israel's razing of entire Gaza neighbourhoods nytimes.com/interactive/20…

30+ UN human rights experts have hailed the remarkable ICJ ruling on South Africa's application re genocide: "Israel cannot continue to bombard, displace and starve the population of Gaza." ohchr.org/en/press-relea…

The Guardian has created a stunning visual map of the scale of destruction in Gaza. Homes, mosques, libraries, churches, schools, universities -- everything that makes civil life possible -- erased. theguardian.com/world/ng-inter…

Is this International Law for Thee, but Not for Me? Dare I say Double-Standards? International law applies to all equally, and is not meant to be an umbrella that folds up at the first hint of rain. 8/8

In November 2023, after the ICJ issued provisional measures against Syria, Canada and the Netherlands said: “We welcome this decision of the Court…The order issued today is binding upon Syria. It must now immediately implement these provisional measures.” 7/8

In August 2022, after the ICJ issued provisional measures against Myanmar, Canada joined a statement with other states: “We reiterate that Myanmar must comply with the ICJ’s provisional measures order.” 6/8

Very curious. In May 2022, the ICJ issued provisional measures against Russia. Canada said: “We welcome the Court’s ruling and strongly urge Russia to comply with his legally binding order….ICJ is a pillar of the rules-based international order.” 5/8

Canadian FM Melanie Joly stated, after the ICJ ruling, that while Canada supports the ICJ, “our support does not mean that we accept the premise of the case brought by South Africa. It is for the ICJ to make a final decision on the case, which it has not done today.” 4/8
