Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes are currently in QUADRUPLE OVERTIME. That’s the equivalent to 2 games and they’re playing their third in ONE game. This is only game one of the eastern finals. It’s 1:27 AM and history is being made.
I once had a girlfriend who chose San Jose as her favourite team because the very first hockey game she ever watched was Calgary Flames vs. San Jose Sharks and the Sharks won. It’s not an important hockey stat, I just thought it was a silly way to choose your favourite team.
Since 1993, only 5 Canadian teams have been in the Stanley Cup finals a total of 6 times. Vancouver Canucks in 1994 and again in 2011. Calgary Flames in 2004. Edmonton Oilers in 2006. Ottawa Senators in 2007. And the Montreal Canadiens in 2021, after a 15 year drought.
That year, Patrick Roy won his second Conn Smythe Trophy and went on to have his number retired by two organizations; the Montreal Canadiens and the Colorado Avalanche. He was the sixth player in history to achieve this incredible feat.
Wayne Gretzky was on the L.A. Kings, who was the losing team in the finals of that year, losing to the Montreal Canadiens. L.A. had won game one and proceeded to get swept the last 4 games as the Great One failed to slip them past 3x Conn Smythe Trophy Winner Patrick Roy.
The last time a Canadian team won a Stanley Cup was 6 years before Wayne Gretzky retired.
The Toronto Maple Leafs finally see round two of the playoffs for the first time in 19 years. The Edmonton Oilers also clinched their first round and are currently projected to take it all. Two household, top tier names. Will they finally bring the cup home after 30 years? 🍁
