I haven’t seen the context of this new convo but I’ve been in marketing meetings where this position was taken for hit making reggae artists.
He never said he didn't want to be classified as Hip Hop. That's not the same comparison.
I liken it to when Jay Z said “if skills sold truth be told I’d probably lyrically like Talib Kweli” that was him saying he’d want to be a hardcore lyrical rapper, but that don’t make no money. He wasn’t rubbishing it, just wanted to go elsewhere with the music and flourish.
Either your music is HITTING or it isn't. The "label" isn't holding you back from anything. You're making the music you want to make and because your own peers don't accept it to the level of success you desire, you want to blame labeling? And boxes?

And there you have it. But guess what. That's nobody's fault but your own. If you try your hand in it and come up short, don't rubbish the genre. Maybe you just can't cut it. Because many of us have been able to for quite some time.
