Ah, so exciting!!! Secondary students preparing CRISPR knockouts for multiplex PCR!! I would have absolutely died to be a part of the UGenie summer school when I was a teenager.
UGenie 2025 is now in full flow. Our students have already generated CRISPR gene knockouts in E . coli and are now preparing their edited samples for multiplex PCR analysis on Bento Labs. @UUGene_Editing @UlsterUniBiomed @theBentoLab.
We also had presentations from our course directors @Ali_Yeates1 and @RachelleIrwin15 on Biology and Biomedical Science UG degree courses @UlsterUniBiomed, and an excellent talk from employability consultant Siobhan Johnston.
Penultimate day of UGenie 2025, and we had a fantastic career's morning with inspiring talks from recent graduates and PhD students @UlsterUniBiomed on their educational journeys to date.
After their career's morning, our UGenie students spent the afternoon analyzing multiplex PCR products from their CRISPR knockout strains using @theBentoLab. As always, using their phones to take pics of the gels through the portable imaging hood was a big hit!

1/2 Another year of impressive CRISPR-Cas gene editing by our year 2 BSc (Hon) Biology students on their Biotech module. They cut the lacZ gene in E. coli and introduced a premature stop codon using HDR leading to a change of blue (wild type) to white colonies @UlsterUniBiomed
2/2 It was also another opportunity to use our set of @theBentoLab to genotype the lacZ edits by multiplex PCR @RachelleIrwin15
