Finally, I know some people may say it’s ridiculous to make a whole post about this, but I believe we need have have open conversations about cultural appropriation in the kpop community to make sure that kpop stans of color feel accepted and understood.
Overall, I don’t think the intention of NTX was to culturally appropriate. This concept was created to show appreciation for their diverse fanbase and their love for the world. Still, let’s request that Victory Company gives NTX cultural sensitivity training in the future.
Still, even if their intention was positive, if their portrayal plays heavily into stereotypes, or isn’t actually representative of the community, it can still be culturally intensive. If anyone who is from the cultures shown would like to educate us, that would be appreciated.
We know so far that NTX’s concept shows each member representing a different culture with the theme of “Kiss the World.” I believe that the intention behind this was to show love and acceptance for all people around the world, not to simply use other’s culture for an aesthetic.
Cultural appreciation is when “someone seeks to understand and learn about another culture in an effort to broaden their perspective and connect with others cross-culturally.”
