Curious that JS Bach and Antonio Vivaldi both d otd (1750, 1741). So different - one so often showing us a higher world, the other as often celebrating this one. But both would have agreed: "The aim of all music should be the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul." (Bach)

On this date in 1750, Johann Sebastian Bach died in Leipzig at the age of 65. The nature of art and how we receive it make cut-and-dry proclamations dubious. But in my view, he was the greatest composer the world has known.

Happy 83rd to Riccardo Muti! On conducting: A conductor should guide rather than command. Nobility of spirit has more to do with simplicity than ostentation, wisdom rather than wealth, commitment rather than ambition. You have to be able to enthral and persuade at the same time.

On July 7th 1860, in the small town of Kalište in Bohemia, a seismic event took place that would shake the foundations of classical music. Gustav Mahler was born, and classical music would never be the same again. Gustav Mahler. My helden-komponist. My God.
