I am always proud this man is my colleague but this week working shoulder to shoulder with him has kept me going. Every single word of this.
By giving the police the discretion to use anti-protest powers some of the time, the government takes away our freedom all of the time. My speech on why @UKLabour voted against the @Conservatives' #CrimeBill which does more to protect statues than women.
233 rapes a day in total. 23 by a stranger. 233 A DAY! So today. About 3 per day would face a conviction. THREE!!! 230 RAPES per day are not criminalised. Is there anything in today's Bill to change this - NO Is there something in it silence women who protest about this - YES
Cases like Sarah Everard's are not 'incredibly rare' and the police must admit it theguardian.com/society/2021/m…
Maybe if we had trust in the conviction of rapists and abusers we could walk the streets without keys in our hand, the other clutching our phones tight to our ear and a constant eye over our shoulders. #ViolenceAgainstWomen #ReclaimTheStreets
Under the Conservatives rape convictions have fallen to an all time low, and domestic abuse conviction rates are dropping off a cliff. The Conservative’s Bill isn't tough on crime, it is tough on the freedoms, rights and civil liberties all of us enjoy.
Dear @pritipatel and @amandamilling I assume you women are on this, I'm not sure of the process for complaint in the Tory party but you've got my email so please let me know. I know you would never sit by and let this carry on, after all the tough words.
As women gathered across UK to mourn the death of Sarah Everard, our Tees Mayor does an event with a man who jokes about hitting your ex to promote his business. This is a body blow to everyone fighting for a safer world and questions need to be asked. mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…
Let’s not pretend this is a good day for women. I hope my neighbour Nazanin, in court alone without British Embassy support, will be treated more gently and respectfully by the Iranian authorities than the mourners at Clapham Common were treated by ours. Happy mothers’ day. 💐
.@UKLabour says it is time for: - Increased minimum sentences for rapists & stalkers - Whole Life Tariffs for 'abduction and sexual assault and murder' - An independent Review into domestic homicide - Misogyny to become a hate crime - A street harassment law
We will continue to support women, but it is time for everyone to join us. It is time for change. The time is NOW. We need a world free of male violence against women & girls, and to achieve this, we must challenge #misogyny & inequality, wherever we see it. #ReclaimTheStreets
Probably the best photo I have taken in my journalistic career. And yes, it's mine – Sophie didn't know so has reshared.
For a week that’s bookended by International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day, I’d say overall it’s been rather a shit week for women.
Two days after my sister was buried in the ground and before many other of the children had been laid to rest, Boris Johnson said that the calls for tighter gun controls were a “knee-jerk reaction” and a case of “something-must-be-doneism“. He is not our ally.
The brutal murder of 16 primary school children and their teacher in Dunblane 25 years ago shocked the world. We must never forget all those who lost their lives on that terrible day. Today my thoughts are with the bereaved, the survivors, and the whole Dunblane community.
The pain women are experiencing at this time is unimaginable. In its sentencing reform bill, the government should work with Labour to tackle the crisis of violence against women that is forcing so many across the country to live in fear. theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/m…
#MothersDay #internationalwomensday2021 Celebrate us for 2 days a year. But god forbid we speak up for the basic human right to feel safe. Sarah Everard was #justwalkinghome. It could have been any one of us. #ReclaimTheseStreets #ReclaimTheNight
If only police had tackled male violence against women with the vigour & robustness that they have used against women praying for the victims Tragic #ReclaimTheseStreets #VIGIL
RIP Sarah Everard. #ReclaimTheseStreets #ReclaimTheNight #SheWasJustWalkingHome #arrestyourown
The jump to talk about violence perpetrated towards men when discussing violence towards women is not only an example of missing the point, but also counterintuitive to the point trying to be made. Who do you think is perpetrating violence towards men? Usually other men!
It didn't have to be like this. It shouldn't have been. We are meant to police by consent in this country an awful awful example.
This is so sad. I was there until about 6:30 this evening, and the crowd was really lovely - peaceful, sad, respectful. I don’t know what the police are doing but it surely didn’t have to be like this
