One Byte Book Reviews

Simple book reviews based on the opinion of one not very special reader 😵💫
I saw a man in the shower; he winked before I Went
Ellen Outside the Lines by A. J. Sass: Great job of capturing sense of responsibility towards changing other ppl’s plans and how uncomfortable being the center of attention is when you’re autistic. Trans rep slaps & I aspire to have friendships like Ellen does at the end.
Not a book review but today I really feel like I contribute nothing of value to society or the people in my life. Everyone is so much more interesting than me. I know this feeling will pass but for some reason it’s always in the back of my mind
The Truth About White Lies, Olivia A. Cole: The house motif as justification of how white people brush racism under the rug was perfect. Was uncomfortable reading it, as I should have been, but couldn't stop. Thinking about gentrification and the insidious vines underneath it.
Lakesedge by Lyndall Clipstone: A gritty and darkly sexy tale that really brought me back to 2010-esque YA Fantasy-what a fun nostalgia trip! Also claims it’s gothic but could have used more gothic vibes
Margot Mertz Takes It Down by Carrie McCrossen: Clever, yet heart-wrenching. A carefully crafted portrait of what it means to be involved in something that is a Bad Thing but doesn't have a clear solution. The ambiguity of the ending closed the story in a meaningful way.
You’ve Reached Sam by Dustin Thao: A heartbreaking and delicate read for sure. It was really hard to put this one down, but it doesn’t feel like something that will stay with me. Sam and Julie had all the makings of a great couple, but Sam especially felt like half a character.
When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O’Neill: The best book I’ve read this year. Felt like biting into a piece of almost rotten, too-sweet piece of fruit whose taste can’t ever be replicated. The writing? Intoxicating. This one’s going to sit with me for awhile.
Finding Junie Kim by Ellen Oh: Wonderful depression rep an illuminating and sometimes horrifying first hand account of the Korean War wasn’t a fan of the fact that war and bullying were compared on the same level
