Advice for any tech worker who's been laid off: if your former employer comes running back to you asking for you to save their bacon, you can and should quote your "fuck off" consulting rates. Also, if it won't buy a house those rates are almost certainly not high enough.

Enterprise leaders: Sharp, experienced folks are coming available. I implore you to seed your existing sharp, experienced folks with new ideas from this talent pool to move towards platforms focused on reducing the silo-hopping your product teams are forced to endure.

Well...was going to post some exciting Slalom Build news. Instead...if you are a dude in leadership like myself wondering what you can do today, at a minimum: cut your folks some slack, give them the day off, help them run interference with their project teams.

I had been an advocate of "assume good intent"...as I continue to grow I realized just how much privilege that requires and have dropped it from my toolbox. I strive to do the work to understand my impact and call out when others are bringing folks down, regardless of intent.

I’m 100% behind eliminating “assume good intent”. I want you to live your values with actions, not hide behind the vagaries of your intention. I can cause pain without meaning to, and it doesn’t fix the hurt I caused. I can only learn and do better, hopefully overcoming my lapse.

One of the most interesting challenges and my focus over the last three years has been the SRE lead for this program. So honored to work with an amazing team on such a meaningful mission.

OH: "we may need to free up some IPs" is good headstone material.

if you’re a leader, and you aren’t analyzing how you would act, and why, in the situation at basecamp, you’re missing a golden opportunity. Every step offers a gold mine of introspection.

Woke up to a lot of folks who are suddenly experts on data center fire detection and suppression design. Having been on the receiving end of multiple "fire trucks on the way to the DC" calls, I can tell you "it's complicated" and happens far more often than you realize.

Human error still being tossed around in post incident reviews. You all have my permission and expectation to call that out in the moment. What was the context that human was operating under? Systems have inflows and outflows and ever changing context. Dig in!

Proud to be part of an amazing team that supports one of the (I assume many) downstream systems that supports HealthCare.gov and Open Enrollment. Sign up today if you need coverage and be sure to vote!

Today is the first day of Open Enrollment. If you need coverage or want to renew coverage, go to HealthCare.gov right now and select a plan that works for you. And then make sure you get out there and vote like your health care depends on it—because it does.
