I’m leaving academia. I start my new career in the civil service in Jan. I’ve made the decision because the competitive individualism underpinning academic culture is really quite horrid. A bit sad because I’m letting go of something major but it’s the right choice for me.

If we look at the stress that manifests during a "normal" presidency. President Obama looked worn-down after 8 years, and GWB did too - and that was during 9/11. We have gone through trauma as a country before, all jobs are stressful including C-I-C.
