Are you an early career researcher in STEM whose career has been impacted by Covid? Fieldwork or experiments delayed? Essential supplies on back-order? Lack of childcare? I want to talk to you for a story! Womxn & historically excluded groups preferred.
During today's meeting: Person A: Why doesn't James come to work these days? Person B: He is working from home since he is taking care of his 3-month old baby. A: Why? Doesn't he have his wife at home? Presenting casual sexism in academia to you.
On Monday I emailed 5 prominent professors regarding a protein purification protocol that they all have already published. I haven't been as successful purifying the same protein and emailed them asking for their suggestion. It's Friday today and guess how many of them replied?
It's a common misconception among PhD students and academics that working outside academia isn't as intellectually challenging, meaningful, or personally fulfilling. In my experience this fear doesn't hold up! PhDs find plenty of fulfillment and all the rest in non-ac careers.
If you had it rough and know how draining it can be, you would like your future students to have the exact opposite experience. What sort of a sadist academic would like their students to have it equally rough, just because they did? Where has all the compassion gone?
I have trust issues with some of the blue-ticked academics and ones with 100K followers, who claim they are preaching about good mental health on Twitter. Their tweets are either full of anger or superficially talk about good mental health. Does anyone here feel the same?
I commute to work by bus and on rare occasions bring my car to work. Today I brought my car, completely forgot about it and then asked my spouse (who was at home) to pick me up from work. I am hoping you are having a better Monday than I am. Clearly not over the holiday week! 🙈
"You land a postdoc position when you do not get a real job". As a postdoc in STEM, who willingly took up the position to widen the research horizon independently, how offended should I be by this statement? *currently fuming* @PostdocVoice @academicvoices @AcademicChatter
If the thought of going to lab on Monday brings anxiety, what does it mean? 1. Do not enjoy my research/project 2. Burnt out 3. Having issues with the lab environment 4. Nothing uncommon 5. Others What's your take on this? @academicvoices @AcademicChatter @PostdocVoice
