I absolutely love the argument that this is somehow due to European warmongering. When the Cold War was over, Europeans couldn't wait to destroy their militaries and if it weren't for Russian aggression, the entire EU put together would probably make like 7 tanks a year

A punchy article in the TFA (by Tony Brown) highlighting the counter-intuitive aspects of "sin taxation".
Brexit was always a seething mass of internal contradictions, with xenophobia, nationalism, exceptionalism, globalism, ultra-liberalism, ignorance and fantasy making a uniquely toxic brew. To imagine Brexit can be carried out rationally or coherently is to misunderstand Brexit.
If there had been more specificity about future relations between the UK and the EU, Brexit would have come to juddering halt. The Brexit balloon was only ever kept aloft by gusts of contradictory hopes and fantasies.
The #PPWR proposal continues to be debated. We are keen to flag the needs of the pet food industry. Wet products can dry out very quickly. Without suitable packaging, we forsee potential hygiene risks. Red more: bit.ly/47MnSxz #PetFoodPackaging

It is neither a ‘cuddly grandpa’ nor something that ‘ruthlessly pursues’ its objectives. Neither. The @EU is a set of treaties and law, adopted by elected governments pooling sovereignty in a common interest. Am glad to work for a body ruled by law.
It never ceases to amaze me how many of the most committed *Brexiters* seem to imagine the EU should be some kind of "nice" cuddly grandpa, rather than an institution that ruthlessly pursues its own and its members interests. What did they think being outside would mean?
£1.4bn of taxpayers’ cash to create ‘Brexit opportunities’? Are we stark staring mad? What would (old-style) Tories say if this bollox came from a LAB govt?

Looking at all of this from a great distance, of course, but wouldn’t the best economic, trade, and financial policy for Great Britain just now be to join the European Union...?
At first I though this was just a link to the survey on imperial units I completed months ago. Turns out to be a new one. Perhaps Rees-Mogg didn't like the answers he got first time round. Please complete. And spread the word. Closes 11 pm 26/08 gov.uk/government/con…
Poster at Brussels Midi Station extolling Britain’s research potential is now wrapped in a ribbon with ‘customs’ on it. Only way for this to be more on the nose would be if the tape was red
3. Talk about Rotten Boroughs! This faux democratic gesture gave Labour Corbyn, and now looks likely to give the Tories Truss - with similar consequences! Recipe for a bonkers, blue-rinse decision, I'm afraid.
The UK's government has, this week, given a bad name to monarchies who don't produce any bananas.
Wow. MP talking about the Northern Irish Protocol says “she doesn’t deal in facts”
Consent of both communities in N Ireland was not considered important or necessary over Brexit but is now being used by Liz Truss to justify unilaterally altering an international treaty @BBCr4today #Protocol
Probably because your prime minister Boris Johnson in October 2019 at a meeting in the Wirral with the Irish PM Leo Varadkar threw the Irish border and 100 years of unionism into the Irish Sea. Happy to help.
Will the EU tell us why a U.K. supermarket with no branches in the Republic of Ireland has to face extensive additional checks on deliveries to shops in Northern Ireland?
A thoughtful tribute from Baroness Nicholson to the late Lord Plumb during the first EU/UK PPA. A very timely reminder of happier times.
