The federal poverty line is arbitrary and outdated. The line determines who is in or out for life-sustaining benefits, and I've seen too many of my clients suffer for want of food, medical care, and housing, even in states where the cost of living is low.

The Thrifty Food Plan — the USDA’s food plan designed to provide a nutritionally adequate diet at minimal cost and the basis for SNAP benefits — is badly out of date.
