Excellent opportunity for Canadian Coast Guard to ditch the awful AOPS design. Sell their two to USCG and use the money for purpose built heavy arctic icebreakers!

Michel Murray, chief advisor to Local 375 (CUPE) Montreal, “it is time to enter the 21st century and to modernize archaic practices at the port. ” Yet in Halifax they are fighting adoption port technology. Longshoremen want it both ways, modern labour practices when it suits.
Halifax can either make some concessions in the short-term to accommodate automation or lose more jobs in the long-term to more productive, automated ports in other jurisdictions. Nothing stands still and survives.
Automation means humans will not be involved in the movement of containers at the Halifax Port. Machines (remote controlled) will control the offloading, moving and loading of containers 24/7. Visit PortWorkersDo.ca to help push back against automation. #nspoli
Interesting side note....it would likely take another ship roughly 10 days to get there if the Charcot required assistance.

The appointment system is a national embarrassment! Too many vacancies and too many board members in carryover. Look at 5 to 10 yrs and will see boards all in carryover, no chair for 3+ yrs, vacancies for 2+ yrs, etc. Crown corporations get short shrift!

So Canada, and others, want it both ways. Recognize via UN the One China Policy, and then do freedom of navigation runs in Taiwan Strait. It is long past time to ditch the One China farce and recognize Taiwan as an independent country and allow entry into IMO.
Ship owners who do not provide adequate communications services for the crew should have higher hull and machinery premiums as they have a higher risk profile.
The grounding, oil spill and subsequent total loss of the Wakashio has been attributed to the vessel trying to get close enough to shore to get mobile phone coverage. 1/2
A small craft like this "Restricted in Ability to Maneuver"? Really, seem like a lazy alternative to actually navigating. Of course it will be very situation dependent but I suspect this is very overused and likely not warranted.
Is anyone else terrified at the thought of global navies operating huge numbers of autonomous surface vessels? It is hard enough to keep clear of the crewed ones! #Navy #MASS #autonomousships
Yet another foreign vessel purchase, when in a bind, because no attention paid to advance planning. This ferry, icebreakers for @CoastGuardCAN and likely more to come. Always able to act when situation critical but never in advance!

With navigation and shipping a clear federal responsibility and @TransportCanada having a mandate for vessel safety, how can TC decide to ignore classes of vessels and their safety? TC should be hauled into court to explain why they allow this to happen.
#Owner and company of #Ingenika involved in deadly #BC #tug accident pleads guilty under Worker Compensation act (not regulator @Transport_gc,) - no jail time, but some fines. cjnyfm.ca/2023/08/17/tug…
Goes to show the difference between #CanadianNavy and @CoastGuardCAN communications. CCG has gone to the Arctic silently for decades and Navy makes a bit deal of seeing an iceberg. CCG is improving but still the "silent" federal service.
The crew of HMCS Harry DeWolf spotted an iceberg resembling an office tower during their voyage northward to Arctic defense training, part of Operation Nanook. For more maritime news visit - buff.ly/2CdtRy5 #CanadianNavyShip #Iceberg #ArcticSea #Shipping #Maritime
#Gibraltar gets bond for #oilspill cleanup, releases ship, but detains #shipmaster. Why is this tolerated? Ship master had a bunkering incident - this does not make them a criminal!
So sad! Never a ship that the CCG would have designed for their programs. Once again @CoastGuardCAN stuck with such ships. Legacy goes back to #Labrador #MaryHichens #TerryFox #MollyKool etc. CCG always makes them work but never optimal resources for what they do.
The steel cutting ceremony for our 1st Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship took place today at @IrvingShipbuild, in #Halifax, #NovaScotia marking another step forward in building our #FleetoftheFuture under the #NationalShipbuildingStrategy.
If we are going to have a common and equitable response to marine spills the terminal manager should be arrested. That was the response to a bunkering accident in Gibraltar, the ship master was arrested. Why just the seafarers?? #criminalization #seafarers
Govt investigating oil spill at Buckeye Bahamas jetty terminal in Grand Bahama bit.ly/3q7F9RG
Oil spills being reported today in the USA and Gibraltar. The report from USA speaks to the unified command and measures being taken to respond. The Gibraltar report is that the ship master has been arrested! Why is this an acceptable response? #criminalizationofseafarers
What is the federal government rationale for "owning" and "operating" ports in Canada? Should these not be totally devolved? #ports #Canadainports #portpolicy

Thank Gerald. I well understand the theory....but the practice has been wildly inconsistent. So would like to know if the RR has appointed an OSC or if CCG is OSC in a unified command.
The Responsible Party (RP), aka the polluter, appoints an OSC to oversee the response operation. @MarineResponse, with which the RP would have a pre-arranged contract, would be hired to undertake a response operation. @CoastGuardCAN would be the Federal Monitoring Officer (FMO).
