Austin leads the way.
Last week Austin, TX lifted their costly parking mandates, this week Taylor, TX (pop: 16K) did it too! Big cities, small cities, red states blue states, cold places, warm places... parking reform is for everyone.
A zoning reform that flew under my radar this year: over the summer, Florida banned zoning referenda. These are deeply dysfunctional, often used to block specific projects and liberalizing reforms. kbindependent.org/2023/06/29/des…
Traditional towns built prior to WWII like Phoenixville, PA are often among the wealthiest, most popular places. Yet, if they had to comply with modern zoning and parking laws, they would be illegal to build in most places today. It's time to reform these broken regulations.
I'm regularly asked, "Where should my community start on zoning reform?" In my latest for @StrongTowns, I list out the six zoning reforms that every city/town in North America should adopt, and provide resources and successful examples: strongtowns.org/journal/2023/1…
Have you read our new ADU report with @AARPpolicy? @AARP VP Rodney Harrell talks about aging in place, ADUs, and how zoning reform can help planners provide housing that meets community needs. bit.ly/3WPvxqo

Paris is DOUBLE the density of New York. We know the NIMBYs are bluffing, but I'd call that bluff and ask them to sign their support for a full up-zone to 6 story Haussmann style buildings (which are illegal to build in BC, so you'd get 5-over-1s or building code reform too).
Every city has commercial strip corridors, but there are proven strategies for rebuilding them as places for people. The theme for #CNU31 was “corridors,” and commercial strips are among the most prevalent and problematic corridor types. cnu.org/publicsquare/2…

Agreed, but we also need building code reform at the Fed and Provincial levels. Even if that land was up-zoned, it would still be illegal to build EU style single-stair family condos. These are illegal to build in Canada because of Building Codes.
Great thread recapping a @SPUR_Urbanist panel on building code reform for single stair apartments and small elevators. In short: this ONE WEIRD TRICK will allow for more family-sized units on infill lots, while maintaining high fire safety standards.
CNU's Project for Code Reform work includes collaborating with @AARPLivable. They help advance community goals & implement positive change. The following examples are the result of examining and making #incremental, targeted updates to local #zoning codes. aarp.org/livable-commun…
Vermont's HOME act allows missing middle housing statewide, reduces parking requirements, targets entitlement delays, and received widespread support. The housing reform law was kick-started by Project for Code Reform work with CNU. cnu.org/publicsquare/2…
fun fact the “International” Building Code is hardly that. it was devised by american architects arrogantly assuming everyone globally would adopt it they took one look and said no thanks. thats why europe builds great apartments and we don’t more dragging of the IBC!
Opening to the first page of International Building Code and you'll never guess what I saw.
Why we cant build multi-family for families in America. SPOILER ALERT: #ItTheCodeStupid centerforbuilding.org/blog
Depoliticizing #housing is the only path to an equitable society.
"Depoliticizing zoning in Los Angeles would require charter amendments, but then, so would every serious reform under discussion," writes @mnolangray. cityjourn.al/3LwDCfz
Phoenix Mayor Yassamin Ansari (@district7PHX) commits to bringing #zoning reforms to vote "as soon as possible".
I’ve been working with the @cityofphoenixaz to bring zoning reforms to city council as soon as possible. As we do this work, I’m encouraged by some of the features of housing reform bills moving through the #azleg. They present exciting opportunities to lower rents & mortgages.
The cities cannot fix the housing crisis alone. It will take every level of government to bring solutions to the table for the people of Arizona. The time for bold action on zoning reform is now. We cannot wait.
NAHB’s new resource, Model Housing and Land Development Code Guide, provides a high-level blueprint for governments of all sizes exploring pro-housing land use and #zoning reforms that can impact the cost and availability of housing. nahb.org/blog/2023/05/c…
