“There is no cruelty in desiring someone’s salvation. To use force in order to rescue someone from error is not to do harm; rather, it is an act of love.” St Augustine.

Augustine argued that the state’s authority could be used to assist the church’s mission of unity, comparing such intervention to the role of a father disciplining his children: “It is better to love with severity than to deceive with gentleness.”

Augustine defends the use of force against the Donatists: “You are of opinion that no one should be compelled to follow righteousness; and yet you read that the householder said to his servants, ‘Whomsoever ye shall find, compel them to come in.’”

Now's a good time to sing the Doxology.

With polls now closed in Florida — Amendment 3 has failed. Amendment 4 has failed.

“Faith consists in the knowledge of Christ; Christ cannot be known without the sanctification of his Spirit: therefore faith cannot possibly be disjoined from pious affection.” Institutes, John Calvin

“We shall now have a full definition of faith, if we say that it is a firm and sure knowledge of the divine favor toward us, founded on the truth of a free promise in Christ, and revealed to our minds, and sealed on our hearts, by the Holy Spirit.” Calvin, Institues

Prayer is the longest chapter in the entirety of Institutes. Calvin is so widely considered to be theologically ridged, yet prayer he devotes the longest time on in his Magnum Opus. Something to think about in our own lives.

I am listening to the Institutes of the Christian Religion, just started book 3 on obtaining Grace and the benefits of it. Facilitating to see that by far the longest chapters are on: Faith, Penance and Prayer.

🧵Thomas Gilbert is extremely helpful on prayer for the pardon of sin. Those in Christ are to pray for the removal of sin, that in its very nature is deserving of dreadful legal punishments; from which legal punishments they have been freed from, upon first believing in Christ.

Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. —Psalm 2:10-12
