Because @USDOTFHWA decided population numbers were too distracting under the previous administration. Federal highway funding was threatened unless state DOTs all agreed to not update existing signs and instead eventually replace those signs sans population numbers.
So why can’t we update the Kansas City population number on the signs entering KC? They’ve been off for decades now.
