The cover for my new book is finished! Thanks to @gayledoornbos @zugzwanged and Greg Peters for the cover blurbs. The book tells the Biblical story through its mountains, helping everyday Christians read scripture like the early Church (spiritual/figural exegesis) @LexhamPress

No one switches denominations for purely theological reasons. Like conversion, people switch due to a number of personal and theological reasons, and these reasons will resist tautologies. If someone leaves your tradition, the good news is that it might not be because there is a…

In my exp., most ppl don't leave Baptist life to become Anglican or Presbyterian bc they've been 100% convinced that Baptist theology is wrong. It's typically motivated by other factors, such as: 1. dating someone from another tradition; 2. smells & bells; 3. whiskey & cigars.

A teaser for our next episode: "We're taught to treat scripture like a corpse...then we wonder why so much of the Bible feels dead to us."

This is incredible. Now that I mostly conduct Morning Prayer services in memory care units, I see the profound ways that residents continue to worship through prayers and hymns that they memorized long ago. One resident I know is almost incapable of conversation, but when we…

My husband has advanced Alzheimer's. At bedtime I say one of two prayers that we both know by heart: the Nunc Dimittis (Luke 2:29-32, KJV) or the confirmation blessing from the old BCP ("Defend, O Lord, this thy child with thy heavenly grace that he may continue thine for ever")

One of the main goals of my recent books, videos, etc. is to help people see how a passage like Exodus 32:27-29 can foster in their hearts the double love of God and neighbor.

"Whoever thinks that he understands the divine Scriptures or any part of them so that it does not build the double love of God and our neighbor does not understand it at all." - St. Augustine

The lack midweek, informal church gatherings is also one of the main reasons there is so much political tension in churches on Sundays. Informal gatherings provide space for people to discuss the news of the day with each other. Without them, Christians foist the burden of…

New post -- In recent decades, churches traded a crowded calendar that sometimes kept us from the world but kept us with each other for a streamlined calendar that gives us margin for mission but often leaves us isolated. thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/trevin-w…

Brazos Fellows invites emerging adults to commit to a common Rule of Life, embracing a rhythm of prayer, study, work, Sabbath, & community, all rooted in the life and worship of the local church. Applications are now open for the 2026-2027 cohort--would you help spread the word?

I'll be starting a new podcast and video series which aims to help people read the Bible with the early Church (ie engage in figural/spiritual exegesis). More details coming in the next day or two...

This is why the crowd laid their cloaks down as Jesus entered Jerusalem. A longing for the transfigured garments of our heavenly King weakens our desire to be clothed in earthly glory.

It looks like my @LexhamPress books, including my upcoming one on the Lectionary, are heading to @ReadBakerBooks. Looking forward to seeing what will come of this-- @jesse_i_myers was so helpful in getting my first book published when he was at Lexham...

Big news in the world of Christian publishing. Lexham Press is being acquired by Baker. Lexham has established itself in the last decade with strong resources, spanning academic and popular level -- and beautifully designed books. community.logos.com/discussion/252…

What are the best theology books published by Brill? I'm looking for titles in Ethics, Early Christian exegesis, Mission, and disability studies, but open to anything.

Allegorical/figural reading requires a deep appreciation of the literal sense, for it acknowledges that God really acted in history to produce signs and symbols meant to draw Christians into the life of Christ.

in Civ Dei, Augustine does not pit allegorical/figural against literal/historical:

It was always going to be this way. And if you do not see that it will go from voluntary, to socially pressured, to forcibly mandated, I don't know how to help you live in reality.

ah—-but this is already happening—Stephanie Packer in California—her insurance wouldn’t cover her medication —but the cost of meds to end her life? $1.20 nypost.com/2016/10/24/ter…

Bingo, wait until your doctor tells you “Medicare won’t cover the procedure but they will cover your drugs to end your life”.
