All handling of this precious inhabitant is only done by him, because he wants to ensure that the data is taken as quickly as possible. While I hold the clipboard, the seahorse is measured by another team member who records the survey with an action camera.
The footage will allow Clement to later sex the animal and look at unique body markings, without having to do it with seahorse in hand. It is quite incredible how fast they work! From capture to release is literally less than 30 seconds. Now, onto the next transect.
Dispatch From The Field: Look at how tiny! And completely different in colour this seahorse is, to the one in the tank I posted a few days ago. This little one blends perfectly to the matching grass, and it was a miracle Clement spotted it.
As always, I’m in awe of the planet’s facinating inhabitants, but most especially… how nature chooses to thrive in the most unlikely of locations!
Dispatch From The Field: Moments after seeing the magical Knysna seahorse! This little creature is a national treasure, as it is our only endemic seahorse and one of only two endangered seahorse species in the world.
Food while on location! In remote locations, especially when we're camping, it's basic food and although I love fresh produce it can only stay fresh for so long. And then it's pasta to the rescue! Any suggestions to go onto our menu would be welcome!
Kanaal 145 DStv.
Of course a bit older now, but hopefully a little wiser too ;) Stand by for many wonderful and I think, very inspiring stories in 2026.
16 years ago! This was on location filming a story for the nature program 50/50 that used to be on SABC. I remember watching the show growing up, (the one night my parents allowed me to stay up a bit later!), so to be part of it was truly incredible and life changing.
… Not for my eyes, but for all the eyes of the viewers at home. And even though I can climb the tree with Wendy, and am enjoying it immensely, I do feel a little sorry for Susan filming behind the camera! She's got a great fear of heights…
… but as we always say, "anything to capture the story"! I could honestly stay up here all day long, but Wendy still has to climb another tree before dark, so I will soak up this moment and let her get on with it. And I have a feeling Susan will be very happy too! 😉
Dispatch From The Field Being in such close proximity to the living, breathing giant that is a sequoia... what a special gift this is! I can’t help but feel deeply thankful to the researchers who always allow me to witness the wonderful work they do for our natural world…
… of this giant in a single image, but when I look up, I look up to about 80 metres Wendy tells me. Then there is their age. Some live for more than 3000 years. I find that hard to even comprehend…
… The naturalist John Muir said that “barring accidents, the sequoia seems to be immortal… unless destroyed by man, they live on indefinitely.”
Dispatch From The Field: It seems to me that I get awestruck by nature on a daily basis, but I am absolutely awestruck right now. And I don’t think anyone would disagree… look at the size of this living, breathing being! It’s impossible to show the scale…
Dispatch From The Field: Making our way (yes slowly but surely) to a hiking point to meet our forest ecologist, so we will be swapping snow chains for snow boots soon. It certainly is a magical winter wonderland!
Pretty different from where we've just been... sun, sea and sharks! In snow covered Sequoia National Park in California's Sierra Nevada mountains to film the biggest living organism on earth. But first, getting these snow chains on the tyres is a priority!😀 Dispatches to follow.
It’s been a privilege spending time under ocean waters and witnessing a remarkable relationship. Can’t wait to bring this inspiring and hopeful story to your TV screen! Next location loading 🐾
… Sharks have so many special adaptations, so much so that many debates have been had, even arguments, about the 'most incredible'. I don't like to single out one, because they are just wonderfully made, but their ability to sense electrical fields is amazing…
… This allows them to find hidden or camouflaged prey, and perhaps even sense a certain energy from humans. I do wonder if it is Cristina's energy that they pick up on, allowing her to enter into that very intimate space.
Dispatch From The Field: These Caribbean reef sharks made it difficult for me to focus! I was lost in their world every time they swam by... their beautiful shiny sleek bodies moving gracefully though the water. Such incredible creatures…
