American badgers are incredible diggers, using their strong forelimbs and long claws to excavate tunnels and dens at speed. Their digging aerates the soil and creates burrows that other animals (like foxes, burrowing owls, and skunks) later use for shelter. 📸: Norman Welsh

It's Fry-day! These are baby paddlefish, called fry. At this age, they survive off the yolk sac they hatched with, but will soon start feeding on microscopic plankton which will help them grow to be up to 7 feet long and 200 pounds! Photo: Ralph Simmons/USFWS

What is it they say is in the eye of the beholder? For this alligator in TX, it's the reflection of the photographer. Alligators can reach surprisingly high speeds in short bursts on land, so be sure to give them enough space so that everyone can feel safe. 📸: Norman Welsh

Meet the green jay, a charismatic resident of South Texas and Mexico. Like most other corvids (the crow/jay family), they are gregarious, intelligent and adaptable. They're so intelligent that they're known to use tools to access insect prey! 📸: Norman Welsh at Laguna Atascosa

Golden-rod hour. This crested caracara is looking for a meal across a flowering grassland in TX. Caracaras are opportunistic feeders, eating carrion, small live prey, and even stealing food from other birds. They can often be seen in company with vultures. 📸: Cynthia Lockwood
