Lovo: ‘We need to be preeminent brand in the new MW. For fb, it presents us with opportunity to be championship program year in and year out. New landscape provides unique opportunity.’
Lovo on buyout staying the same: ‘It’s commitment, on Coach Eck’s end and our end. I’m taking words out of his mouth here, it’s going to take an incredible opportunity for him to leave.’
Lovo: ‘Want to make sure that those who invest in this stadium understand it’s more than a football stadium. We’re pedal to the metal on that. Looking forward to getting started on that.’
Eck: ‘We’ll be in top half of resources in conference next year. Told Coach Mullen before our game with UNLV, we could be playing for a conference championship a lot.’
Eck: ‘We’re not content just because of one good year…. We’ve built trust in our formula. I have great trust in our plan, executing it is harder than developing it. Need to fight that urgency to relax. Good grasp on what we need to do to win here.’
Lovo: ‘Momentum is important in life in general. We have momentum, fb is a big part of that. I know we’re not going to take a step back, whatever we’re doing that’s good, we’re going to enhance, whatever we need to fix, we’re going to fix.’
Eck on missing title game: ‘I told the players, if this is the greatest injustice they face in their lives, then they’re having pretty good lives…. We have to go win our bowl game.’
Eck on why he likes future of UNM football: ‘I think the way people have rallied around us, environment that second OT was as good an any G5 in country. Ability to have so much success this year. Goal in G5 is to be that team in the CFP. Schedule is set up, only one P4 game.’
Lovo: ‘There are achievable incentives. Incentivizing success. Coach has proven this year that we’re going to compete at a high level. We wanted to be aggressive.’
Lovo: ‘I’m an emotional guy, I pour my heart into everything I do. That win was at the top. It was tough Sunday morning. We knew this news was coming for Jason’s contact. Don’t want to lose sight of what is coming. That was an emotional 36 hours.’
Lovo on urgency to get it done: ‘It was. The buy-in of the community, we can’t lose that momentum. Sense of urgency to get it done. This is just the beginning. Super excited we were able to get it done. My team was really eager to get this done.’
Eck: ‘My family and I like it here. We’re winning. I like the people I’m working with…. It was important to get it done. The players were excited about it, helps with retention of players.‘
Lovo: ‘We were always in communication. As the season continued to evolve, we both believed this was the right time to continue that momentum. This was a conversation that had been happening over the last couple weeks.’
Lovo: ‘Thx everyone for being here today! Exciting to announce Coach Eck’s new 5 year contract. To get where we want to be, successful fb program is critically important. Testament to his staff and his plan and vision. Thing that makes me most proud is investment from community.’
