“Seemed like a dream that everyone was calling saying, ‘I’m sick, I’m sick, I’m going to the hospital.’” Years after 60+ people were sickened by salmonella at a funeral reception, some are still coping with the consequences. propub.li/34dysSo

The regulatory framework here is just stunning. Health districts must inspect schools for environmental hazards, BUT: If certain toxic chemicals are found, state law doesn't require school administrators to notify parents, students or staff.

More than 200 people say toxic chemicals at a Washington public school led to cancer, early puberty, brain damage and more. School officials knew about hazards. They acted slowly and haven’t faced penalties from regulators. (@seattletimes / @propublica) seattletimes.com/seattle-news/t…

For years, a dangerous salmonella strain has sickened thousands and continues to spread through the chicken industry. Yet America's broken food safety system allows it to be sold to consumers. (story by @bmyeung, @irenatfh, @mrsimon22 & me @propublica) propublica.org/article/salmon…

Lovely thought.

.@StoryCorps & FB created in same year. Think of how depth of human connection may change if we shifted time from latter to former.
