iReady is not, I repeat NOT a Reading intervention. It just isn’t. If someone tells you it is, ask them who they work for. It’s either A) Curriculum Associates B) Someone who has given CI a bunch of money
Who can spot the 🚩 🚩 in this intervention plan for a 2nd grade student who was initially flagged by DIBELS in Kindergarten, but never received any support?
@PoPville Hi, I found these two running down Florida Ave NW this morning. They’re warm and safe now but trying to connect with their owners.
Learning to read by 3rd grade has just been named as a priority in the SOTU. My critique? The path towards said goal was identified as "high-quality tutoring and summer school." Why not high-quality, core Tier 1 instruction during the regular school year??

With the reading struggles so many of our students face, we thank you for shining a light on the need for structured literacy, @AthenaCNN! 👏 👏 👏 @pgcps Where is the district on providing meaningful training & guidance for teachers on the #scienceofreading?
Reading is fundamental. Research shows an approach to teaching reading through phonics, ie. sounding out the letters, works. But for the last couple decades some U.S. schools instead embraced unproven methods - like teaching kids to guess words using pictures. It didn’t work.
I shared my story because it’s important to know why I’m doing this work. I don’t ever want any other parent to walk around with the deep pain of seeing their child be failed by a system that is suppose to help them.
Why isn’t literacy a basic right in America? On today’s episode of First Person, @NaomiPenaNYC tells @lourdesgnavarro about the lengths she’s gone to to ensure her four dyslexic children learned to read in the public school system. nyti.ms/3iObMzL
Parents: If you feel like like you were sold a story that @ehanford describes in her new podcast & were disappointed to see the recent letter by 58 professors, authors & curriculum developers responding to Hanford’s work, please sign & share! openletter.earth/the-parent-res…
“Children who received Reading Recovery had scores on state reading tests in third and fourth grade that were below the test scores of similar children who did not receive Reading Recovery.” Why is this program still popular? Why is @LDH_ed cheering it? Just why?
And @ehanford's newest @apmreports radio documentary! About how all of these materials and curriculum that promote debunked ideas about reading got into schools in the first place. I've listened to the first two episodes and they are so, so good. features.apmreports.org/sold-a-story/
If you've listened to Sold a Story and want more on what the "science of reading" is all about, I've got a reading list: apmreports.org/story/2022/10/… Happy Reading! Unfortunately, reading is not an especially happy experience for many. LISTEN to the podcast. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sol…
Much of our education system bought into a disproven idea of how kids learn to read. For 2+ years, @ehanford and I tried to figure out how and why. I’m so excited to share what we’ve found. The first episodes in our six-part podcast drop tomorrow. features.apmreports.org/sold-a-story/
What do you recommend the @pgcps Board of Ed prioritize in the FY2024 Operating Budget? Respond by Oct. 15. ¿A qué áreas recomienda que la Junta de Educación de PGCPS dé prioridad en la financiación del presupuesto operativo del año fiscal 2024? docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…
You asked, we answered: What is @SecCardona doing about our national reading crisis, and the pervasive use of weak curriculum in US elementary schools? Is he aiding the grassroots, growing Science of Reading movement? I’m afraid it’s grim, y’all. Thread.
Question: “Why do we need laws, regulation and oversight on how to teach reading?” Answer: Because our school districts (yes, this is Maryland) perpetuate the habits of poor readers & call it *reading instruction* @moh_choudhury #justNO
😫 @pgcps, what & where can we learn about the district’s implementation of #scienceofreading in the classrooms? #letrs training uptake among k-3 teachers appears slim at best, anecdotally.
If you think Maryland teaches reading aligned to science, you are wrong. *Balanced Literacy* is a tradition here — unfortunately, these folks were #soldastory. Waiting patiently for October 20 & @ehanford’s and @CLPeak’s new podcasts on the topic features.apmreports.org/sold-a-story/
Double yikes! What does that mean for the districts still using & considering these screeners as suitable for identifying struggling readers? 😫 @MdPublicSchools

👋 @MdPublicSchools & @pgcps : Thoughts on use of the #dyslexia screener inc. as option w/ @NWEA MAP Reading Fluency screener since 2021? We’ve seen that the MAP reading fluency screener does not adequately screen 4 “struggling readers” per Ready to Read req’ts. @dyslexiasomd

This is the question: why use a reading assessment that tells you “all is well” when it isn’t? Often F&P BAS is used to prove progress on an IEP w/ reading; yet student is reading 3-4 years below peers. Predictable books have no business in K-3 reading instruction or assessment
Excellent illustration of the issue with the @FountasPinnell assessment. Don’t miss @pentucketteach describing his correlation exercise with state assessment outcomes:
"Experts say the most important thing parents should know is that kids getting structured literacy at school have a much higher chance of reading success." @HKorbey explains #BalancedLiteracy vs structured for parents: usnews.com/education/k12/…
