We, @SMDatabase's core team, are thrilled to share this publication alongside the updated version of the data. "Bilateral flows and rates of international migration of scholars for 210 countries for the period 1998-2020" Open Access: doi.org/10.1038/s41597… #BiblioDemography
📄We show how adding nationality (via language models) can transform migration studies, helping distinguish emigration vs. return migration. 🇺🇸➡️🇨🇳 Literature reports high US→China emigration using academic origin. But with name origin, ~48% are return migrants (vs. 33%).📊
Have u been wondering where to find a list of publications about the Scholarly Migration Database (SMD) using the SMD data or publications by its team and collabs? Or the ones citing SMD-related works? Now, we have a public Zotero Group library to join zotero.org/groups/5999043…
🆕📰 reveals global patterns of the migration of scientists shedding light on how researchers move both within and between countries. A team of researchers @MPIDRnews found large disparities in the appeal of various countries and regions to scientists. demogr.mpg.de/go/migration-o…
Very proud of this work by @FaezeGhorbanpor Thiago Zordan Malaguth and me, which addresses the left censoring issues in migration research that uses digital trace data. It will appear in the proceedings of #ICWSM2025. Faeze is going to present it there. doi.org/10.48550/arXiv…
I am extremely happy to share. Just out in @pnas.org: “Global subnational estimates of migration of scientists reveal large disparities in internal and international flows” Open Access: doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2… w/ @danko_maciej @XinyiZhao16 @ezagheni @MPIDRnews #PAA2025
Some subnational regions were disproportionately more attractive to receive scholars from both internal and international origins. Some were consistently sending scholars to both internal and international destinations: brain drain. Data on @SMDatabase doi.org/10.5281/zenodo…
Scholarly Migration and Scientific Mobility: @MPIDRnews recently hosted a symposium to bring together researchers from different disciplines and countries. It was organized by @EbruSanliturk, @Akbaritabar, @TheileTom and @ezagheni demogr.mpg.de/en/news_events…
📂Find the data publicly on Zenodo doi.org/10.5281/zenodo… and all details on the website of the Scholarly Migration Database @SMDatabase scholarlymigration.org “Use them to find the causes and consequences of the migration of scholars!”, says @TheileTom 🧵4/5
