Just like land, the ocean has seasons. Thanks to hundreds of robotic ocean-monitoring floats equipped with oxygen sensors that collect data about ocean health and transmit it back to shore, we are able to measure the ocean's breath. @GO_BGC
Excited to see that @Scripps_Ocean will lead the next 3-year phase of Southern Ocean monitoring through the @NSF and @NOAA funded @SOCCOMProject. Together, SOCCOM and @GO_BGC have transformed how we monitor and understand ocean health.
We are excited to announce that the new phase of SOCCOM has been funded by the @NSF and @NOAA for three more years of operation under the direction of @Scripps_Ocean oceanographer Lynne Talley: scripps.ucsd.edu/news/scripps-o…

📣 🚢 @POGO_Ocean is offering a number of #shipboard #fellowships onboard research vessels during 2024 for early career scientists, technicians, postgraduate students (#PhD or #MSc) and #Postdoc Fellows! 🗓️ 15 Feb 2024 to 30 Nov 2024. Apply here: buff.ly/4ceo4Y7
📣 IPCC is calling for authors to contribute to the Special Report on #ClimateChange & Cities, scheduled for release in 2027. 📺 #IPCC Vice-Chair @DianaUrge stresses the need for diversity of scientific disciplinary & regional perspectives. 🔗 bit.ly/PR24AC
Last week, after months of hard work and lots of conversations, @ScienceMagazine launched a new series—spearheaded by @NewsfromScience's @elizculotta, @scchak and me—about how researchers are #decolonizing science. science.org/toc/science/38…
"The current situation is undoubtedly very alarming. An event like this is extremely unusual on the records we have in Antarctica." - Scripps Oceanography geophysicist @JaminGreenbaum on the current #heatwave impacting #Antarctica. @lemondefr has more. ⬇️ lemonde.fr/en/environment…
Here's a fantastic opportunity to lead a research program on the role of #Antarctica and the Southern Ocean in the global climate system. We're seeking a 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 for the AAPP, based at @UTAS_ in Hobart. Applications close 15 Sept ➡️ aappartnership.org.au/vacancies/#pro…
A new study from @MBARI_News researchers and their collaborators using SOCCOM float data has revealed that storms trigger the release of carbon dioxide from the ocean. This work will help improve models used for forecasting our changing climate. Dive in: mbari.org/news/new-resea…
It has been a massive joy to work with Maggie Gonzalez from @LoyolaSES on observations of some of the coldest waters on Earth using @SOCCOMProject data! Huge shoutout to @Brown_DEEPS and @LeadershipAllia for supporting her work this summer.
The world’s first open-ocean study to use robotic floats and sediment traps to track nearly a million tonnes of carbon flowing from the surface to the deep of the Southern Ocean each year. @IMOS_AUS | @IMASUTAS | @CSIRO | @AntarcticSciAus | @best24YANG aappartnership.org.au/under-the-pump…

Combining observations from robotic floats and sediment traps to track carbon flows
The Argo program recently hit a major milestone: The network of robotic floats has taken more than 3,000,000 temperature and salinity profiles of our ocean! Learn more about the Argo program: argo.ucsd.edu You can also video Argo data here: argo.ucsd.edu/data/
Sirawich (Ivy) Pipatprathanporn @WichColony from @GeosciencesPU reporting on twenty+ years of MERMAID (@Scripps_Ocean, @TeledyneMarine, @osean_tech ), looking forward on plenty more science to come, at the @SOCCOMProject Decennial Meeting at @Princeton.
The #ExOIS program was presented at the annual meeting of the @SOCCOMProject this week. Great discussions about how @GO_BGC can help with #MRV for #mCDR. Thank you Mark Wells for presenting!
We talk about the cryosphere a lot, but what does this term mean? The cryosphere refers to the regions on Earth where water freezes into snow or ice. The term comes from the Greek word for icy cold—krios. Learn more: nsidc.org/learn/what-cry….
Rebecca Wright et al.* separate the effects of anthropogenic carbon from decadal scale climate variability on carbon storage in the Southern Ocean. doi.org/10.1029/2022GB… *Corinne Le Quéré, Nicolas Mayot, Are Olsen, Dorothee Bakker #SouthernOcean #ocean #carbon #ClimateChange
"This century, rapid melting of ice sheets and mountain glaciers has raised overall global sea levels by around 1.5 millimetres a year. Melting ice has contributed 75% to the overall increase in ocean mass." — @AntarcticSciAus in @ConversationEDU theconversation.com/heavy-water-ho…
3. Like plants on land, phytoplankton need nutrients to thrive, such as nitrate (NO₃). Growth can be calculated from their nitrate consumption. A fleet of robotic @BGC_Argo floats from @IMOS_AUS @SOCCOMproject continuously measures nitrate concentrations.
On the last night of the @RVAtlantis transit to Alaska, @melissatruth deployed 10 drifters from @Scripps_Ocean's Lagrangian Drifter Laboratory. The drifters measure sea surface temp & barometric pressure to support better weather forecasts. Learn more: go-bgc.org/expedition/eas…
