No amount of fine-tuning will stop #VAR being a catastrophe because its raison d’être - spotting what mere mortals can’t - is also its fatal flaw. Even if never called upon, its very existence dulls the spectacle because we don’t know when we’re entitled to get excited.
VAR hasn’t just made goals dull; CHANCES are also meaningfully less exciting. Time was that the lack of a linesman’s flag in an unfolding attack was the cue to get excited. Now you’ve no idea when to get excited because the flag staying down means nothing. #VAR #hateVAR
