I put together 15 principles of what I think it means to be a great designer. I wanted to summarize 30 years of hard earned lessons and share them with you. Text version in the comments.

Substrate is building a next-generation foundry to return America to dominance in semiconductor production. To achieve this, we will use our technology—a new form of advanced X-ray lithography—to power them. America invented semiconductors. We will lead again.
As a studio we put an illogical, and what some may argue is even irresponsible, amount of time and attention on ensuring an identity concept is worth presenting and then presented well. To me, it’s our responsibility to steward these ideas, not just revealing them, but caring…
The desires of the future look increasingly tactile, with value placed on forms shaped by hand, where craft becomes a measure of trust.
I wish more designers had the clarity and conviction to answer this.
The way we see is what we offer. The courage to reimagine is the value we bring. It’s why designer founders build differently, and why great entrepreneurs want designers in the room. Perception shapes outcomes and vision creates new futures.
For the design community to truly flourish here, we must move beyond chasing speed, validation, or earnings. Design is a practice, an intentional pursuit. Instead of infatuating over something new, fast, or viral, ask if it’s thoughtful, inevitable, and true.
