Do we know how many wrasse are landed to, or die on #salmon farms? Many starve, and others die if the mort sock is pulled up too fast as their swim bladder explodes. How do @rspcaassured or @ScotGovMarine monitor this wasteful fishery with any accuracy? petitions.parliament.scot/petitions/PE21…
We are also calling for spatial planning to protect the places and marine features that wrasse are associated with. Importantly, we’re calling for salmon farmers to declare how many wrasse are killed each year.
🌊Wild #wrasse, a keystone species of reefs, at risk in Scottish waters. Landings of wrasse species from the wild have been rapidly increasing, due to their usefulness as cleaner fish in #salmon #aquaculture facilities. 📌Read more here: cmscoms.com/?p=40274
Currently, there are almost no restrictions on where or how many wrasse can be trapped. There are also weak limits on when wrasse can be trapped: they can even be caught during their breeding season – because that is when lice are at their worst in the salmon farms 🐟
Scottish wrasse need our help. We’re calling on the Scottish Government to take action to protect these amazing fish & their habitats from overexploitation for the aquaculture industry. Please sign & share our petition to #SaveScottishWrasse 👉🏻 petitions.parliament.scot/petitions/PE21…
Foreign multi national chicken farmers trap Scottish song birds to eat lice in battery farms, many starve to death, then they are all killed and dumped! 😱 No, not really, but the marine equivalent is happening every day.🐟🏴❤️ LOVE FISH! Please sign; petitions.parliament.scot/petitions/PE21…
Scottish wrasse need you! 🫵🏻 We’re calling on @ScotGovMarine to protect Scotland’s wild wrasse, which are being caught in unlimited numbers in our waters for the aquaculture industry. Please sign & share our petition to help #SaveScottishWrasse ➡️ petitions.parliament.scot/petitions/PE21…
These colourful and long-lived fish play a vital role in keeping our coastal ecosystems healthy and balanced. They do so by feeding-on & controlling many harmful parasites. It’s why wrasse are known as ‘cleaner fish’.

We are excited to be joined by @thatsealgirl from @Youth4Seas @siftscotland who will be running a workshop during 'Coastal Testimonies' event and exhibition in Eyemouth 19-21 July More info 👉 bit.ly/CTeyemouth #coastaltestimonies
Attempts are being globally to restore kelp beds, yet in Scotland we have not decided whether to pilot dredging it up or not. #ClimateCrisis? What #ClimateCrisis? #NoKelpDredge #COP26Glasgow @MairiGougeon @markruskell @Savekelp
It’s hard to miss the beautifully bright turquoise waters surrounding our island right now. Thanks to @PeterIMiller for sharing this image from Sentinel-3B from 14-17thJune & for sharing that the colour suggests a mix of plankton, including an active bloom of Ehux or Karenia 1/3
Help please! We are looking for suggestions of issues in the #marine & #coastal environment for a horizon scan. It is important that issues are not well known (i.e. widely reported in the media or journal articles). Please add your ideas & retweet. Many thanks! #marinefutures
Unprepared and not doing enough to combat it. Where does protecting+recovering inshore blue carbon sinks come into the plan @scotgov? It would be prudent to leave our kelp beds in place given that they act as sediment stabilisers, coastal protectors,+carbon sinks. #NoKelpDredge
The Scottish Government plans to resume the work of the Seaweed Review Steering Group which was instigated on the day that Roseanna Cunningham put a stop to plans from an alginate company to be the first to commercially dredge for kelp in Scotland in 2018. #NoKelpDredge
Yet less than 5% of our inshore waters are protected from trawling and dredging. And what is being done to protect our Priority Marine Features? #WorldOceansDay
From research on how marine habitats absorb and store carbon to our support for Marine Protected Areas and marine litter initiatives, on #WorldOceansDay watch our video to find out more about @scotgov work to protect our seas 🌊
But @marinescotland, the Marine Assessment shows a decade of terrible decline. We STILL don't have VMS on all registered fishing boats. It is misleading greenwash to state that we have 37% Marine 'Protected' Area, in reality less than 5% of the seabed is protected from damage.
Dear @erna_solberg Our Ocean Defenders are hoping their message doesn’t fall on deaf ears. Please Don’t Hurt Our Whales #StopWhaleTesting #HearThis @whalesorg @OrcaSOS @jeffrey_ventre @Quad_Finn @Dolphinchaz @HughHarrop @rickygervais @ErichHoyt @seashepherd @LeoDiCaprio 🐳🐋💜💛
On #WorldOceansDay stand up for #OurSeas and let @scotgov know that our seabed, marine habitats and carbon sinks need REAL protection not meaningless designations. Please sign and share for change - bit.ly/inshorelimit
