The fact is, we sometimes read Scripture, thinking of what it ought to say, rather than what it does say.

I love theology and learning. It's so important. But you don’t need a degree to point people to Jesus. If we’re being honest, most of us are theologically educated well beyond our present level of obedience. What we most need, is the Spirit’s power.

The Bible is more communal than individual. Jesus teaches us to pray "Our Father" not "My Father" Paul uses the phrase, "our Lord" 53 times, & "my Lord" only 1 time. "Jesus is my personal savior" is not found in Holy Scripture. We are the people of God We belong to each other

One even regular church attenders sometimes say things and act in ways “out of step with the gospel” is that they do not see church as a catechizing community, the very context for identity and formation but simply as a resource center for their compartmentalized “religious self”

Grimké: The function of the pulpit is not to entertain, to amuse, to satisfy an idle curiosity: it is to instruct, to inspire ... to keep ever before people the one supreme figure in history, the Lord Jesus Christ, & to beget within them a passion for him, & for a Christly life.
