The fact is, we sometimes read Scripture, thinking of what it ought to say, rather than what it does say.
Today my new book ‘Love Your Church’ releases! Small group kit also available. Explore with a small group, membership class or book club what the church is, why being part of it is a glorious privilege, and why it’s worthy of our joyful commitment. thegoodbook.com/love-your-chur…
I love theology and learning. It's so important. But you don’t need a degree to point people to Jesus. If we’re being honest, most of us are theologically educated well beyond our present level of obedience. What we most need, is the Spirit’s power.
So true!
My parents both turned 70 this year. They celebrated their 50th anniversary. They also sold their house and moved to a new place to help my brother and his family plant a church. You don’t retire from the mission.
The recognition of sin is the beginning of salvation - Martin Luther
When people fail you...remember to give them as much grace as you expect God to give you.
The Bible is more communal than individual. Jesus teaches us to pray "Our Father" not "My Father" Paul uses the phrase, "our Lord" 53 times, & "my Lord" only 1 time. "Jesus is my personal savior" is not found in Holy Scripture. We are the people of God We belong to each other
Q: What is the chief end of man? A: Man's chief end is to glorify God & to enjoy him forever. Q: Does this include the craziest year ever? A: Yes. This includes 2020!
Pastors, our attempts at a hybrid "biblical but self-help and entertaining" style of preaching has not produced disciples who choose conviction over comfort. I have never been more convinced that we need to preach the Bible with rigor and without restraint.
At the root of every sin is the worship of something other than God.
The Church in America is over-politized and under-gospelized.
Until pastors discover and embrace their identity in Christ -- which is accomplished by Christ and received by faith, not works -- they will keep trying to find their identity in their position, their preaching, their persona, and their programs. ftc.co/resource-libra…
One even regular church attenders sometimes say things and act in ways “out of step with the gospel” is that they do not see church as a catechizing community, the very context for identity and formation but simply as a resource center for their compartmentalized “religious self”
Grimké: The function of the pulpit is not to entertain, to amuse, to satisfy an idle curiosity: it is to instruct, to inspire ... to keep ever before people the one supreme figure in history, the Lord Jesus Christ, & to beget within them a passion for him, & for a Christly life.
I hate this! God help us!...weeping yet again...want to wrap my arms around my pastor brothers, hold them close, keep them safe, but I can’t...I cling to four words in my grief...Jesus is still Lord. religionnews.com/2020/05/08/fri…
