Unable to sell the opera, he converted parts of it to individual songs. One of those songs was “The Entertainer,” which became even more popular when it was used in the soundtrack for the film, “The Sting.”


Scott Joplin, whose dream was to see his music performed in music halls, wrote one ballet and two operas in ragtime. The first opera was called “A Guest of Honor” which was set in the Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City Missouri.


The Maple Leaf Rag, composed by Missouri’s own Scott Joplin, was the first piece of music to sell a million copies of sheet music, making it the world’s first “hit” tune.


Did you know that Harry Truman hated the Missouri Waltz? Why? Because it is about Iowa. Yet, it’s the official state song.
