Y2 Lang students - invaluable stuff here.

This is me on talking to @DrMatthewSweet, @TimandraHarknes, @selina_todd and @David_Goodhart about language, class and social mobility. At the end of my segment I was told fairly firmly that linguistic inequality in the UK is over. It's not. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

Using "woke" as a term of abuse is but the latest attempt by the nasties to make bigotry/sexism/racism/prejudice against minorities the norm - and any divergence from that "standard" a source of mockery. Hell if woke is *decency* then it's a badge I'll wear with pride.

Language preferences are not the same as language judgements. Feel free to like/dislike whatever accent or language feature you choose. Just don’t judge the *person* on the basis if the way they speak. Then maybe consider the source of your preference. #sociolinguistics

London has been moved to Tier 4. Days ago, the DfE threatened schools in London with legal action because they wanted to protect their communities by moving to online learning for a week. Let that sink in...

This is absolutely shocking & should be a wake-up call to those who deride the idea of being 'woke' or minimise the racism faced by people of colour in the UK. You can't know about the extent of it, unless you are on the receiving end. You really do need to wake up.

I'm getting an influx of followers who are either new Eng Lang A Level students or new Linguistics UGs. If this is you and you are wondering 'Did I choose the right subject/course?', the answer is 'yes'. The world would be a better place if more people studied how language works.
