Even when I agree with their viewpoint, it undermines public understanding of science to cherry pick evidence to paint these pictures. Advocacy should be based on evidence, not evidence manipulated for advocacy. I think the crucial point is that evidence matters, not opinions 7/n

Crucial thing is that one's qualifications are no guarantee they're representing scientific evidence accurately. One of my biggest frustrations as a scientist the whole pandemic has been seeing academics who should know better misrepresenting evidence to shore up a viewpoint 6/n

One thing that emerges from survey data is that while trust in science is high, understanding of scientific practice itself is societally poor. Sounds innocuous enough, but I'd argue it's a Trojan house for a lot of dangerous nonsense. A short thread.. 1/n
