If you’re looking for new tools to add to your toolbox, come join Erika Warkentin & me for a k-3 or 4-12 session on SmartLearning tools that yield deeper learning w/ inclusion, self efficacy & student well being at the forefront. May 13 - 3:30 @ Spencer @SmartLearningCA
I love using Storyscopes. They allow students to control how much info they take in at once. It reduces stress & empowers them to respond to their own needs, rather than align with everyone else. And as always, everybody can. @SmartLearningCA
A reminder to all @newwestschools educators that registration is still open for my 2 part literacy sequence called “From Image to Poem”. Dates are: Jan 29 & Feb 5. Thank you @susanclose5 for sharing your brilliant sequence with me to share with our educators! 🩷 @SmartLearningCA

I love the process as you use each part to analyze and distribute information; swinging back to have learners show what they now think & know integrates understanding. Deeply thoughtful responses magnify engagement and focus as you head into processing new information. Bravo!
One of my favs! Know-Don’t Know-Want/Need to Know. So good for helping the brain sort through what it needs to pursue for deep understanding but also a language rich tool to help transfer to writing. Safe, low threat, accessible by all! @SmartLearningCA
One of the beauties of inclusion is that we can get the same information about our kids when we’re open to them showing their learning in their own way. It doesn’t have to look the same for us to understand where they are. I’ll be forever grateful for this child & this moment❤️
Looking forward to our learning round today with new career teachers. We will be working with grade 6/7 students at Central Middle School. Focus: writing. Resource: The Mysteries of Harris Burdick. Thanks to Andrea W for hosting us.
A pic from our travels! I’ll be using this pic 2 develop imagery skills using @SmartLearningCA coaching cards & storyscopes! Place yourself anywhere in this photo & help us see what you are thinking, feeling & sensing. What do you want us 2 understand about your experience here?
Coming soon: Wayi Wah! Indigenous Pedagogies. Extend your learning to explore how racism and bias are embedded in education systems, as well as our own perspectives—and how to create equitable education for all learners. Pre-order now! portageandmainpress.com/Books/W/Wayi-W…
Congratulations to everyone at Howay. You will always hold in your heart the sense of being stronger and smarter together. I treasure my ties to your wonderful school.
Thank you for the invite to the Grade 5 farewell at Howay. Such a beautiful school community! A very special event. #sd40learns
Congratulations colleagues on a year like no other. Through it all you did what you needed to do to ensure each learner thrived! Like petals in an exquisite rose, your learners felt connected and cared for. They will always carry how you and others around them made them feel. 💓
A Gift to Last, part 2. Thank you Shlomo. You showed the power of applying principles and practices with learner agency, social & emotional learning, and competencies for deeper learning in mind. Grant Wiggins & Jay McTighe would cheer! Lucky learners in the north! Savour summer
A gift to last - part 1. Last night I received a reflection on the effects of SmartLearning on learners new to the practices & on a very talented & caring first year teacher. His depth of practice & the visible effects brought tears. Seeing his insights & viewing evidence, a gift
So much fun walking teachers through Part 2 of ‘Mr. Peabody’s Apples’ Sequence. Today was about negotiating meaning w/ text and searching for thoughts, feelings & words of the main character to help us consider the story’s message. So much fun with @newwestschools teachers.
So much fun walking through part 1 of the sequence ‘Mr. Peabody’s Apples’ w/ @newwestschools. Deep dive into strategies that included all learners from beginning 2 end. Looked at language use & tools that welcome all learners so that each learner thrives in the same space🍎
Jim, this work was so much like our work together. Noticing learning as it progresses, analyzing samples, planning based on data shows us how to guide learning forward. Seeing learners reach to express more makes my heart sing. Thank goodness for a kit of powerful processes! 🙏🤗
