Fantastic advice. This cannot be emphasized enough.
Said this before, but when interacting with the Japanese, DO NOT use an informal tone or use putdown jokes until you've clearly established it is acceptable with that person. Otherwise, it just comes across as rude. I likely shun such people thereafter. Not my job to parent them.

Well put. Some things don't need an explanation. It is far easier to accept the puzzlement and just let your subconscious sort it out while you sleep.

Books like this are great. Remember the explaining words and you will always be able to get your ideas across. I think I might have to grab a copy.
J語 learners: I just bought this book, "Shitte Hanasou News no Kotoba" (知って話そうニュースの言葉). Using simple language and hiragana, this text made for kids introduces the difficult terminology used in politics and economics conversations and news.
Knowing more vocab won't necessarily make you more fluent in your target language.
