Looking back to a glorious day in the summer, under the Ridgeway. Jemma Batten talks about the work that has been done at Manor Farm, Berwick Bassett. Farming and wildlife living harmoniously side by side! #marlboroughdowns #spacefornature #Wiltshire #treesparrows
We have just received news of our longest ever Corn Bunting movement. It was ringed using the thermal imager on the Marlborough Downs on 26/10/2020 as a juvenile male. It was photographed on a @GWCT Partridge project near Winchester on 18/5/22 - 61 miles away 569 days later!
First check of Tawny Owl boxes for the year. This is the second year in the row that this female has nested in this box. The nestling is one of the most beautiful owlets we have ever seen.
Another 51 Yellowhammers ringed this morning means that in three sessions at this site, we have ringed over 200 of them. There are about 4-500 present! Today we also ringed a record 4 adult Stock Doves - the forgotten farmland bird!

It's mid 2nd broods & it was the biggest day of the season with a quite brilliant 93 Tree Sparrow nestlings ringed from 18 broods. This is 5.2 per nest which is phenomenal, mind you we ringed four broods of 7! Checking Swift boxes & what do we find? You guessed it Tree Sparrows!
The glorious weather we've had recently, means that hay making and lambing have overlapped, making for a very busy time for some of our members! Join us on Online Farm Sunday to find out what else is happening on the farm this weekend. #lofs20 #marlboroughdowns #spacefornature

Interesting session monitoring Sparrows on Marlborough Downs. 14 ringed & 33 retrapped with the local movements shown on the map showing nos ringed as nestlings & retrapped at the red site today. Total 125 birds caught included 3 superb Corn Buntings, a Kestrel & a Fieldfare.
Was great to watch 3 possibly 4 short eared owls up on the ridgeway this afternoon 🦉🦉🦉 @BTO_Wilts @RSPBSouthWest @Team4Nature @WiltsWildlife @SpaceForNature @NearbyWild @VisitWiltshire @WSBRC #wiltshire #nature #wildlife
Tree sparrow superhighway on the Marlborough Downs - thanks to all the wildlife champions that helped plant 500 metres of new habitat!
I borrowed a thermal camera tonight & in 2 hours on the Marlborough Downs before the rain, ringed an amazing 4 Corn Buntings & 3 Skylarks. I met the farmer & he told me it was a stubble field untouched since harvest. There were 30 Corn Bunts & 40 Skylarks roosting in the field.
This field was a boring bit of grassland when in 2012 we added a sprinkling of wildflower seed. After a slow start and careful management, we've watched as a blaze of colour and cacophony of sound has developed in this small corner of Wiltshire! Proud? You bet we are!
Fantastic get together of farmers and advisers involved in landscape scale conservation ... lots of enthusiasm and discussion ... very inspiring!
