"We estimated that a single-payer universal healthcare system would have saved 212,000 lives in 2020 alone. We also calculated that US$105.6 billion of medical expenses associated with COVID-19 hospitalization could have been averted by a Medicare for All system." @Alison_Galvani
FASCINATING preprint finds that a #SARSCoV2 variant mimics human liver protein that may trigger T-cell autoimmunity—thus might damage the liver. Authors suggest it could explain a surge in children hepatitis. Note: ORF-1 protein is *not* found in vaccines. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
More context on today's news: Pfizer/BioNTech vs Moderna, lagging kids+teens vaccinations even with boosters authorized, timeline for FDA meeting.
Preliminary data for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for children indicates a possible 80% efficacy. “Let’s look at Moderna by comparison,” @AnjKhem says. “They looked at two doses of 25 micrograms… They did have a lower efficacy data from that 37-to-51%.”

If someone posits a binary choice for how to deal with the pandemic, it is an indication of laziness, lack of creativity, ignorance, or perhaps other motives. Remember this great Swiss Cheese Model for containing transmission. A better approach than “either or” is “yes and.”
Incredible video of a T killer cell DESTROYING a huge ovarian cancer cell using pore-forming toxins #MedTwitter

Tomorrow marks two years, yes two years, since @WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Since March 2020, so much has changed, including our outlook about what is possible in health care. We hope this changes your perspective too.
"It affects their partners and all those they care for. It affects the creativity and productivity and impact they have in their immediate and extended communities. Boosting women’s health can have a powerful ripple effect."
"There is often a lack of recognition that lives are intertwined, that society and health are strengthened when we acknowledge and address inequities such as those affecting women. Improving women’s health doesn’t just help individual women."
A great conversation and a great twitter follow, with @choo_ek!
Conversation with @RealChemistry_ about boosting investments in women's health and research: realchemistry.com/article/3-ques… "Whenever we talk about equity, there is an unspoken question from some: 'What’s in it for me? Why should I care about and invest in improvements for others?'"

3 Questions with Dr. Choo: Women’s Health - Real Chemistry
Even though women represent more than half of the world's population, their health and well-being has not been prioritized. It wasn’t too long ago – 1977 – when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration...
COVID Update: Biden just released his National COVID Preparedness Plan. Even if you haven’t been paying much attention to COVID with Omicron fading, this is worth paying attention to. A lot of news in here. 1/
Excellent read in NEJM - vaccine manufacturing & supply need to be made more globally available & collaborative, not only for controlling COVID-19 & variants, but also to test and refine a coherent global vax strategy for future pandemics nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
“Skeptics have seized on the rapid development of the vaccines…to undermine the public’s trust…But the breakthroughs behind the vaccines unfolded over decades, little by little, as scientists across the world pursued research in disparate areas.” nytimes.com/2022/01/15/hea…
Before United Airlines' vax requirement, one employee was dying *each week* from covid. Today, 3k employees have covid at United. ZERO (0!) are hospitalized and none have died. That's the difference. That's vaccines. That's a requirement.
New from @united CEO: “While we have about 3,000 employees who are currently positive for COVID, zero of our vaccinated employees are currently hospitalized”
Seriousness aside there seems to be a kind of symmetry to an alcohol company putting capital behind a pandemic solution, capital that probably came from people’s own pandemic solution at home ;) martinis > vaccine development pathway???
Jesus, what a headline for our dystopia lol
