#OTD in 1862, Richard Gatling patented his rapid-firing multiple-barrel gun. The early hand-cranked version was capable of firing 400 rounds per minute. The Navy's current Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) features a Gatling-style gun that fires 4,500 20mm rounds per minute.
