Afternoon all. I am taking a break from Twitter. I’m still posting on Bluesky. For those who haven’t moved across, good birding.
Evening @DungenessBO @Sandwichbirdobs. Do you have social media accounts on other platforms? I’m reducing my visits here on Twitter, but being a member of bird observatories I still like to follow your posts. Regards
Afternoon. Has anyone attempted to transfer Merlin sound files in Audacity to get spectrograms of birds calling?
A lovely stay in Deal this weekend. The Deal Bookshop has a well stocked natural history section (more books bought) and the little seafood area at Jenkins & son fishmongers served a very nice fish bun. The more important wildlife sightings are over on the other channel
Planning permission has now been granted for both the hotel and surf lagoon at Betteshanger Country Park following a decision by Dover District Council that these developments do not require an Environmental Impact assessment. We are taking legal advice.
EVENT UPDATE: If you planned to attend this Friday's Fisher's Estuarine Moth Survey Evening with has been CANCELLED due to the strong winds predicted for the evening.
Afternoon. I’m still posting about my wildlife sightings, just on another platform, Bluesky. A few Kent birders are over there already.
REVEALED: I've mapped the land owned by water companies United Utilities & Yorkshire Water - over 200,000 acres combined - & their SSSIs (nature reserves) Just 16% of SSSIs owned by water firms in England are in favourable condition @Feargal_Sharkey 1/ whoownsengland.org/2024/09/05/map…
Hello @BritishSpiders, are these Laribiodes cornutus and sclopetarius? Photo’s taken at Elmley NNR, Isle of Sheppey today 01.09.2024.
📣 Our friends at #SaveMinsterMarshes are hosting a talk by author and environmentalist @RogerMGwriter on 18 September in Ramsgate. Tickets are free but donations help their campaign, fighting to protect the marshes & Pegwell Bay from development. 👉 eventbrite.co.uk/e/save-minster…
This is very questionable woodland practice @ForestryComm @ForestryEngland. Too early in the year for such drastic management when there are still flowers and plenty of insect activity. Would emplore you to review this oractice. FYI @WoodlandTrust @NaturalEngland
A visit to Goliath Falls NNR, Bodmin (ish). Few birds were heard, a Nuthatch being the pick. Am reading @guyshrubsole The Lost Rainforests of Britain so it is educational seeing a fragment of temperate rainforest. A contrast to the woods back in Kent. A few ferns to ID.
Evening all. Over on the other channel you can find my Eastwell Lake and Eureka Park summaries.
Just back from the Milton Creek CP monthly Wildlife survey. Apart from Common Carder, Shrill & Brown-banded Carders outnumbered all other Bombus species. A Saltmarsh Horsefly is a lifer, while a Toad by the lake was my first this year in Kent. Plenty more photos to go through.
A couple of hours at a sunny Sandwich Bay. c10 Sandwich Terns, including juveniles, seen with 7 Swallow’s flying up the coast later. Flecked General & Dune Villa are lifers. Sea Holly looked lovely as the Viper Bugloss finishes. Plenty of Common Blue butterflies seen.
An early (7am) visit to Ridham Marshes, Kemsley to see if the birds I saw last night were Cattle Egrets. Found 5 bird amongst the tall grass around the cows. Probable Hobby flew through as I parked up. Driving home, appeared to be a flock of Egrets on the Iwade side of the A249
Morning. Could anyone help either an ID for this bee please? Photo taken at Hothfield Common yesterday.
