.@GavinNewsom, today’s a good day to sign #AB1663! We all need a support system in our lives. The Court shouldn’t be the first stop for disabled folx when decisions are being made. #SupportNotCourt @CAgovernor
#AB1663 now on @CAgovernor @GavinNewsom's desk. If Californians need help making decisions, like everyone sometimes does, we deserve #SupportNotCourt. AB 1663 ensures this by reforming conservatorships and writes #SupportedDecisionMaking into law. thecentersquare.com/california/bil…

32 years after the ADA, there are still many battles left to fight. This is one of them. Join the fight at supportwithoutcourts.org.
#AB1663, championed by @BMaienschein, aims to reform the probate conservatorship system so conservatorships are easier to exit, makes the court consider the preferences of a conserved person, and writes SDM into law. This crucial civil rights bill offers us #SupportNotCourts.
And there's little awareness of other methods of support, like #SupportedDecisionMaking (SDM), which gives people with disabilities the chance to get #SupportWithoutCourts... just like people without disabilities.
In probate conservatorships, our right to make decisions for ourselves about our housing, our healthcare, our social and romantic relationships, our finances, our education, and more can be taken away, with very little oversight and slim chances of ever getting rights back.
32 years after the ADA was passed, people with disabilities (and people perceived to have disabilities) are still exclusively targeted for probate conservatorship.
So, in other words, the ADA is a crucial civil rights bill that gives people with disabilities some protections in public. When it comes to fighting structural ableism, the ADA is a starting point - not the finish line.
But what exactly is the ADA, and what does it do? In short, it's a civil rights law that attempts to make sure we as disabled people have the same rights and opportunities in public as everyone else. For more, watch here: youtube.com/watch?v=TuZadM…

Tim Jin, @DisabilityVU Assistant Director of Communications Rights Projects: "It never made sense to me or my parents. Why take away someone’s rights in order to protect them? "
AB 1663 is before the Senate Judiciary Committee right now! @BMaienschein: "If a Court is going to restrict someone’s civil liberties, it is imperative it be done as a last resort." We totally agree! #supportwithoutcourts #ab1663
