Hello Twittersphere from #TMIG. For all those interested in Australian seaweeds, the #GreatSouthernReef and #Tasmania please retweet and add us.
Happy to report that my honours research is published! We found that Tassie giant kelp forests support similar fauna to forests without giant kelp. So they might offer redundancy, but maybe only since these forests are already so degraded #OpenAccess @ link.springer.com/article/10.100…
So excited to have completed my Confirmation of Candidature today, supported by an unreal team of supervisors! @FrancisPrue @dr_snorkel @CayneLayton @GeorgeValentin_ . Finished the day at a spot that constantly reminds me of why I’m doing this project.
"Something with a big mouth can change an entire ecosystem". @WolfeBarrett gave us all something to ponder over Easter at our March @beeraquatic event! Don't forget that we'll be taking a break over ANZAC day, but back on Thursday 30th May #tuna #scicomm
Through this picture book, young readers discover the Spotted Handfish: an ancient species facing modern threats like invasive predators & climate change. Gina M. Newton's book, inspired by 20+ years of passion, brings attention to this walking fish's plight. #greatsouthernreef
Not one, not two, but three new species of Weedfish described from Australia in one fell swoop🤯!! New blog by @Diploprion, Collections Manager Ichthyology @AustmusResearch. Blog here: australian.museum/blog/amri-news… Publication here: mapress.com/zt/article/vie…

Celebrating Emma Robertson, a Palawa artist who's blending culture & nature in "Tune in to Saltwater Country". Her art, from kelp to quills, echoes the deep bond between Tasmanian Aboriginal peoples and the sea. #GreatSouthernReef #IndigenousArt artsandculture.google.com/story/2gXh6AEr…
For coastal marine species in Tasmania climate change is an existential threat. There is no shallow habitat further south where they can retreat. Kelps, like Lessonia corrugata, are at great risk of extinction.

So happy to share my first paper!! The endemic kelp Lessonia corrugata is being pushed above its thermal limits in an ocean warming hotspot. #OpenAccess @ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jp…
Bull Kelp: More than an ecological gem, it's a nutritional goldmine, rich in trace minerals. Tasmanian #FirstNations people ingeniously used it to carry water, tapping into its health-boosting properties as it infused water with vital nutrients. 📷 Water Carrier by Vicki West
Southern Bull Kelp thrives in the face of relentless tides and swells of the southeast regions of the #GreatSouthernReef. Supported by their remarkable giant disc-shaped holdfast, these seaweeds can grow over ten meters long and weigh up to 75kg. 🌊🌿 #Durvillaea #KingIsland
Full PhD scholarship available in beautiful Coffs Harbour to study kelp and coral responses to marine heatwaves. Great team and location. Contact me for more information and to apply 😀
Climate-driven invasion and incipient warnings of kelp ecosystem collapse. Our @NatureComms paper highlights the critical need for early detection of range-shifting keystone species capable of transforming and collapsing ecosystems. nature.com/articles/s4146… @ScottDLing

1/ @tanya_plibersek you have an incredibly difficult job but this is NOT 'listening to scientists' - reducing emissions & NOT approving more coal/gas wld be tho 2/ our #GreatSouthernReef is ALSO under critical threat from #ClimateChange yet receives a paltry 1% of GBR funding!!
