It would be foolish to say Carter lost explicitly because of rent control, but to add that on top of all of the challenges facing the city at the time it passed really poisoned the well for him.

It's really cool that Mayor Frey has done such a great job keeping rents down in Minneapolis through YIMBY policies that he feels comfortable actively pushing back against rent control in his current mayoral race. YIMBYism can work without giving in to bad ideas from the left!
Minneapolis kept rents far below the national average by building more housing, affordable and market-rate, and that’s essential to my plan. Your rent control proposal would make that nearly impossible. It's failed in city after city, and would be disastrous for Minneapolis
