PhD defense today! Emilie Kallenbach defended her thesis titled "Microplastic in Freshwater Macroinvertebrates". Congrats Emilie, and best of luck in your exciting future projects! 🙂🥳👩🎓 #microplastic #PhDdefense
In this new study researchers from FBL have cast light on the relationship between carbon, calcium and phosphorus in dense charophyte beds growing in calcareous ponds on Öland, Sweden. sciencedirect.com/science/articl… #Charophytes #Bicarbonate
Our new paper shows that aerenchyma in grass roots is important in both wet and dry soils. In wet soils it aids the internal diffusion of oxygen whereas in dry it reduces water and energy consumption. In both situations root extension is enhanced by aerenchyma. @NewPhyt
The project "New Danish Lakes" which has generated heaps of activity over the past three years has now been concluded. Much of the work has been summarized in this special issue (in Danish): vand-og-jord.dk/seneste/ #phosphorus #biodiversity #CO2 #methane #rewetting #newlakes
One of our favourite lakes Lake Filsø was on the radio this Saturday. Find the podcast here and learn more about the development in the lake since its' re-establishment in 2012. (In Danish) radio4.dk/program/vildsp… #Filsø #LakeRestoration #biodiversity
Great news! One of these nice grants went to FBL for a joint project with co-workers from IGN and SDU. The project aims to discover how we can best support climate and biodiversity by rewetting low-lying areas. Read more below. #biodiversity #ClimateChange #wetlands @DFF_raad

Most of the #phytoplankton samples that Trine processes in the microscope lab are fixed with Lugol and are kind of drab to look at. So this live sample from #dystrophic lake #Gribsø containing #desmids, #chrysophytes and #raphidophytes was a real treat!
Work started ten years ago bore fruit today in the form of a new paper entitled “Global patterns of the leaf economics spectrum in wetlands". It is solid work based on 365 species in 151 studies. See below for details. nature.com/articles/s4146… #wetlands #plantbiology
We are delighted to announce that we finally have a new lab technician! Britta brings significant experience from a career in industry and the health sector and will take on the multitude of varied tasks that is the work life of a university technician. Welcome among us!
There is a strange smell in the lab these days...👃 It emanates from MSc student Casper's muddy #Macroinvertebrate samples from #Gribskov. Casper is monitoring whether changes to the hydrology of the forest result in increased #biodiversity in the macroinvertebrate community.
Charophytes, like this #Chara aspera, take up phosphorus efficiently both in the algae, but also in their outer carbonate crust. As a continuation of the work in the paper below, we sampled C. aspera to measure C, Ca and P concentrations in the algae and the crust.
Rice, rice, everywhere rice! Ole Pedersen’s group grow rice all over. This week they even went to Germany to pick up a special type of deepwater rice grown especially for their experiments. If you too love rice you can follow their work on the blog here: flooding.dk
Impressions from last weeks field course excursion. 100 students in two large tourist busses tried their hands at limnology methods. It was great to get out of the virtual classroom and into the field. And this week we do it all again. 🙂
Arctic Biology field course 2020 is up running in a special version due to the pandemic conditions. Student projects focus om terrestrial and freshwater topic. Follow us at @ArcticStationUC, facebook.com/Arctic-Station… and #arcticstationdisko
Yesterday, Kirsten, Lars, Max and Trine did some reconnaissance prior to this year's corona version of our course in #freshwater #fieldbiology. Later in the summer we will revisit a few of these locations accompanied by ~200 students. Can't wait! 🙂
As part of a campaign directed towards potential new students, Lars is introducing the #biodiversity crisis and how it is addressed at Biology at #UCPH. The video is in Danish, but go ahead and check it out @BIO_UCPH video.ku.dk/biologi-biodiv…
Ja, det er altså ikke mig, der forsvarer BSc grad, men en anden Trine. :)
Another BSc defense! Trine showed that plant roots which have a barrier to radial oxygen loss are also resilient to water loss. Transferring this trait from wetland plants to crops such as barley and wheat which do not have root barriers may improve their resistance to drought.
BSc's abound these days. :) Jonas and Christoffer investigated how presence of invasive prey fish #RoundGoby affected brackish water #pike growth. Via scale analysis they found that the round goby was the main reason for increased growth of pike #EsoxLucius #NeogobiusMelanostomus
This week Emil defended his BSc thesis - a literature study about salinity tolerance in over 100 species of crops and wild plants. The study shows that there is a rich genetic potential in wild species to improve salt tolerance in our crops even without the use of GMO.
